BEAUTIFUL DEER TIM! Did he nosedive into the peatbog or what? I bet it feels even better that you harvested that beauty without government regulation to help you out.

Sadly enought there is not much of a story with this one. There is not even any history with him.

The last buck I shot, pictured below, was much smaller but so much more rewarding just because of the history and the drawn out hunt for him!!

Anyways, I have a couple small properties in Columbus that I have hunted for about 5 years now. Its a great little spot with a lot of deer. Past years because of the lack of food the deer have not been coming through much. This year because of the price of corn they have started planting more and more and have planted a field right next to one of the properties I hunt. This has once again brought the deer heavy through my area.

In the far SW corner of the property there is a large area where does bed. During the rut I always see bucks cruising this area. Every year you will see at least one mature buck on his feet if not more. Basically if you sit it out you will have an encounter.

So this year, because of work I have not hunted much at all! After a horrible 2011 season I wanted to shoot a nice buck so I left this property alone. I got my "rut" stand ready in late september and then I left and didnt come back until I knew the bucks were cruising. In the past 18 years of deer hunting I have seen the best action from Nov. 1 through the 15th.

So the rut came and I started to sit this stand. The first day saw lots of activity but all the chasing was on the far end of the cut corn field where I can't hunt. I saw a few does come through where I was and saw two small bucks. I knew if I held out my time wold come.

The next day, Nov 7th, I got into my "rut stand" at about 2:30 pm. I ws sitting for about an hour and my butt started to hurt. The pad had blown off so I was sitting on a hard seat. I stood up to stretch and when I did I saw a deer moving to my east. I can't believe he did not see me stand. He was only about 75 yards when I stood and the tree that I am in has limited cover. Well... he didn't see me and kept coming. He got within range, turned broad side and I shot. He took one step after the shot and went head first down an irragtion ditch. I was worried because I did not know how deep that ditch was or where he went so I only gave him about 5 minutes and then I got down and went to see where he was. I should of taken a picture!!! When I got there he had fallen right down into the ditch. Its about 12 feet or so to the bottom and then its a mud pit. He was sinking. About half of his body was underneath and all I could see for his head was one beam barely sticking out. My buddy chad was out with me and needed his help quick. I couldn't let him sink into the mud any deeper and there was no way I could pull him out alone. The mud was thick and heavy.

Anyways, Chad came and we both pulled him out. It was not easy!!

I had some pictures from the stand but don't have them on this computer.

So, sure, it was a good buck! And I am super excited but I had more enjoyment from my last buck which was a season long hunt with trail cam pics and history. This guy just showed up and I got lucky!!  :Deer:
