Fishing in Ely area lakes has been very good the last week.
Quite a few walleyes and smallies are coming out of Shagawa Lake, Jackfish and Pipestone Bays of Basswood Lake, the White Iron Chain of Lakes, and Snowbank.
Smaller Northern Pike (25-34 inches) are also hitting in most lakes, being caught with frozen Ciscoes and live Suckers.
The water level is high, and still very cold, even though the surface temps are in the mid 50's.
Bass are not on their beds, and with the cold nights predicted, may not be for several weeks or many may not spawn if it stays cold for too long.
