use the old universal 7mm which is discharged from a remington 700... 150-160 grain.  next time i'm drawn in wisconsin thinking i'll use the black powder or try wrastlin it.

Nothing over 30-30 150 grain flat tip. In an open sight break action of course.

If I ever decided to try bear hunting it would be with my crossbow.  I'd have a 50cal Desert Eagle on the hip, 45 IWB, and a 357 on the ankle.  For those just in case times  :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

bear you got the horizontal bow permit? I've had it for the last 6 or so years,I find it hard to let go of my compound,I still use a recurve for carp, pratice with 4 shots a day for deer season with the compound.I owned a cross bow then sold it out of guilt.I keep hoping, I guess, feel its unfair to use the mechanical point & shoot.
What you shootin and what do you think about it?

Dew, ya don't a crossbow permit for bear or turkey only deer, which I have. So yup my weapon of choice is crossbow. R u asking what I think about crossbow for hunting? Quite frankly I believe they have a place for sure. what guilt are you talking about? I feel no guilt in making a clean ethical kill cause my accuracy is spot on. Crossbow huntser still are sublected to the same distances as vertical users an maybe less. After 35-40 yards energy loss is rapid an without a rest the patterns opens up greatly. if I want to shoot a deer over 40 yards I use a gun. Nothing wrong with tru old style, love traditional bows, But if I was to hunt with them Id feel the guilt cause I certainly don't have the time to be accurate for kill shots. Much more time is need to be accurate with long or recurve bows an if you miss a week of practice its pretty much back to the drawing board. I would like to see crossbows introduced int the archery season an actually have the first two weeks set aside for traditional longs an recurves only.

as long as your a good shot and know your firearm.. I don't see an issue with any of the before mentioned methods of harvesting a beer.  you can still only take one.

I have 7 points in the area I hunt in Wisconsin.. deferred my tag this year.. the wife of my hunting buddy out there is in round 3 of a long cancer battle. it wouldn't seem right if I was drawn and things were bad for her.

The guilt trip I refer to is that I use a bow for the challenge,I am older and the rifle/shotgun were used for 40 years,The big bucks dont mean much to me anymore. I quit firearm hunting the crossbow just seems to easy cock point shoot no waiting to draw while a animal is right there.I like to see a deer at 5-10 ft and watch it,see what it does.I had one yearling last year sniffing my glove as I stood in a cedar surounded by boughs..My thoughts are a crossbow is just like a firearm,Not much of a challenge.I do take a deer every year,I am not picky like a full grown doe,.Last year I waithed till Dec just to be out in the open air longer..My decision now is do I quit or go cross bow,I had a accident years back and its showing more each year

I have a hard time seeing what I type when the reply window keeps me from seeing beyond a certain line.So I can finish my reply here.
Boar I like and agree with this statement you proposed>>>> I would like to see crossbows introduced int the archery season an actually have the first two weeks set aside for traditional longs an recurves only.<<< That would be nice the season is so long I dont see why it couldn't be done maybe even a month of traditional,a month of compound with traditional then for the last part of the season any type arrow propulsion.
We have deer in our yard daily,I never have or will take one out the door,I canoe across the bay we live and hunt in a private woods.Few woods here so these small wooded areas carry every deer in the neighborhood. We been watching 2 10 pointers grow their antlers for weeks now,Have a telescope set up on the screened porch,If one came into my range I am not sure what I'd do?I do hunt for meat,My big rack and deer days are past me.

I suspect just about any firearm/bow will work over bait for black bears, longer range shots from a boat in AK we used 300mags or .338's,up close and personel some of us downed sized from 44's to 357's because they were easier and more comfortable in a shoulder holster and better peretration than a 44 for personal protection while hiking  and fishing rivers and streams, most outfiters use shotguns, now while out for a afternoon stroll down the neighborhood st in Kenai during the salmon run bears could pop up anywhere along the way, this 454 cahill did the job in 3 shots from the hip on this charging brown, dropped dead within a few feet.
