Weather. That is the big word this week with howling winds and 3 inches of rain early in the week making for muddy waters from the bridges to Joe creek on Sharpe. The fishing in this area has been excellent but with the bad river etc running mud it just turned off making the fishing poor around Pierre on Sharpe. Oahe fishing was effected also especially with the high wind days (20 to 50 mph). I guided the Matt Henderson group for one day at West Bend and one day on Oahe the took the Steve Hauptman group on Oahe for three days. Both groups caught fish with limits of smallmouth bass on Oahe some days and some walleye with a 15 fish (walleye) high being the best stringer. Part of the tougher bite going on is weather related with Sharpe being shut down around Pierre but some of the bite on Oahe is also due to fish that just are slow to bite. A Salmon bite has been going on on Oahe with an avg of two fish a day per boat mostly in 20 fow or less. Pulling plugs for these salmon is also producing some nice northern pike and a few bigger walleye. This spring May had a lot of windy days and it looks like October is going to be that way on many days. This makes the outcome of most fishing trips weather related so check the extended forecast before you head over. I look for the next bite on both lakes to be more on jigs/gulp/minnows but we still caught more of the fish this week on crawlers/bouncers/gulp in depths of 10 to 20 fow however on Oahe casting shallow is a real good option.
