Lots of talk about the rut. When do you think it starts and why is that? I have heard all the theories and thoughts. I personally say it's the days lenght of light, and the first full moon after the Autumnal Equinox is the kick off of it.

Hunting is not life and death. It is more important than that.

Area I hunt is pretty consistent year to year. November 1st through the 10th is always the best. Tapers off but will still see some rut activity through November but nothing like that 1st week or so. I believe that moon does have an impact on deer movement but does not trigger the rut. How could it when we see the same thing from year to year.

An old timer Ive heard say was the 11th day of the 11th mounth, thats prety close id say but I agrre with whiteoak. I cant help but think also that alot of species like fish spawn when the water temps are just right. Cant help but think deer might relate to temperature in the same way, when weve had warm deer seasons the rut seems to run later. but at  the same time bear have their rut in late may an early june, but that s completely different species that hibernates
