A man died Thursday morning after falling through the ice on a Bayfield County lake.

Authorities responded to a call from a man fishing on Basswood Lake in the Town of Delta.

The caller and his 68-year-old friend were attempting to gain access to the lake. While en route, the 68-year-old man broke through the ice. The caller tried to get his friend out of the water, but was unsuccessful.

The man was retrieved from the icy water and pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said it is believed the man was crossing over a channel in the lake with a current below.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Iron River Fire and Ambulance Service, Drummond Fire Department, divers from Bayfield Fire Department and deputies from the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office assisted on the scene.
