The lake was a buzz with activity. When you are looking to find and keep the fish under your favorite fishing spot, you should look for a certain set up. I have my best luck when I fish away from the crowd. I like a spot where there is little or no traffic, and stay away from the other houses. There is a lot of area where you can find 8-12 fow and not a lot of noise.

I like to put a Swedish Pimple down the hole first. The walleye usually pound it right away. A little jigging will get them to bite. This is the Red Lake Walleye trick. You will read report after report of guys throwing down a lure and getting one or two fish right away, and then the fishing dies.

They will hit the first lure down the hole right away, and then after that the walleye hate jigging. I'll dead stick until a fish appears on the flasher. The trick is to bring the fish up to the bait once, then bring it up again, then, trick them. Drop the bait down a little. They usually hit it then.
I'll keep the lure 18 inches off the bottom. Occasionally I'll bounce it off the bottom to get the fish's attention.

The fishing tonight was a lot better away from the crowd, as usual. The cold front has slowed the fishing action. I suspect it will pick up early this next week.

The crappie are beginning to show up on the South shore.

The snow cover is very light, and cleats are strongly suggested

The ice is over 20 inches thick.
