Adrian Peterson will not play in the NFL this season after losing his suspension appeal, the NFL's Greg Aiello announced Friday evening. Peterson argued that the NFL backed out of an agreement that he would be reinstated as soon as the running back had resolved his child abuse case. Hearing officer Harold Henderson ruled otherwise.

According to Aiello, Henderson found that "[Peterson] has not demonstrated that the process and procedures surrounding his discipline were not fair and consistent." He added: "[Peterson] was afforded all the protections and rights to which he is entitled, and I find no basis to vacate or reduce the discipline."

The NFL Players Association is expected to file suit in federal court in hopes of getting Peterson reinstated, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. La Canfora believes that the Peterson will have a difficult time being reinstated before the end of the 2014 season, however. With a favorable decision in court, however, Peterson's suspension could be lifted before April 15, the first date he is currently eligible for reinstatement.

Peterson was initially handed a suspension for the rest of the 2014 season and perhaps longer after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge. He had been sitting on the exempt/commissioner's permission list since Week 2 after being indicted on a felony child abuse charges stemming from the offseason, when he allegedly beat his four-year-old son with a switch and caused lacerations and bruising.

The exempt list amounted to a paid leave of absence. According to Peterson, NFL vice president of football operations Troy Vincent told the running back that his time on the list would count as "time served," and that he wouldn't subjected to the NFL's revamped domestic violence policy.

Peterson was not reinstated after his plea, and was instead told to attend a Nov. 15 disciplinary hearing. Rather than face the possibility of punishment, Peterson skipped the meeting, and released a statement calling it "unfair."

I don't understand how they can reinstate Ray Rice and not Peterson. Rice knocked his fiancé out on camera.  I would love it if some of the women on the site weighed in.

He was never going to play for the vikes this year.  If he were to play in one of the last few games and got hurt the vikes would would be on the hook for next years contract.  15 plus million.  His buy out is only a million.

he's a big $$$ for them right now and he's turning 30.. once those big power backs hit 30 their numbers drop and their price tag goes up if they stay at the same team. let him go. sad to see him leave this way. but we have a young team now that with a few key players getting added they may be able to do something in a year or two. heck no one predicted they would do this well once AP and castle went out

The NFL Players Association filed a lawsuit against the National Football League on Monday challenging an arbitrator's decision to uphold the league's suspension of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

Filed at the U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, the lawsuit claims arbitrator Harold Henderson, a former NFL executive hand-picked by Commissioner Roger Goodell to hear the case, was not impartial.

Henderson on Friday upheld Goodell's unpaid suspension of Peterson until at least April 15, saying Peterson "has not demonstrated that the process and procedures surrounding his discipline were not fair and consistent."

Peterson, 29, pled no contest to a misdemeanor reckless assault charge last month for injuring his 4-year-old son in May while disciplining him with a wooden switch.

After the no-contest plea, Goodell ruled that Peterson, the NFL's most valuable player in 2012, will not be allowed back on the field until April 15 at the earliest.

When the NFLPA filed an appeal, Goodell chose Henderson, a former NFL executive vice president of labor relations, to hear the case. Henderson has heard 87 appeals involving personal conduct and drug issues.

Peterson, in appealing Goodell's suspension, claimed he had been told by NFL executive Troy Vincent that he would only be suspended two games.

ABC News released audio tape on Monday of a Nov. 12 telephone conversation Peterson had with Vincent, concerning how long Peterson would be kept off the field.

"It will be two additional games, not time served?" Peterson asks during the conversation.

"No, no, no, no ... it won't ... The one this weekend," Vincent responds. "So really, it’s just next week and you ... will be back."

Six days later, Goodell handed down his suspension.

Henderson, in his ruling, said Vincent did not promise a two-game suspension and, as the NFL's vice president for football operations, had no authority to do so.

The union claims the NFL retaliated against Peterson for not meeting with the league days before his suspension, a get-together the union says the six-time All-Pro was not required to attend.

"This is another instance in which the National Football League will say anything on one day and do anything on another day to try to support a position that at this point is completely devoid of any rationality," NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith told ESPN Radio on Monday.

Peterson has played in only one game this year.
