Car goes through ice on Lake Winnebago WI


A Sussex man and his 8-year-old son died after the Jeep they were driving on Lake Winnebago went through the ice.



Just before 7 a.m. Sunday, dive teams and ambulances rushed to the lake in Oshkosh after learning about the incident.

"It sounds like a crack had opened up recently according to some of the local fisherman and (it) is believed it somehow led to the vehicle encountering a little bit more of an open space of water which led to them falling through," Lt. Gordon Ledioyt said.

Dive teams pulled the father and son out. Andrew Doro, 40, died shortly after being pulled from the water. 


The Winnebago County Coroner said Monday that the man's 8-year-old son, Derek Doro, had also died.

"Obviously the ice conditions this year are a little more inconsistent than in years past so there are dangerous spots out there. People really need to proceed with caution when they're going to be out the ice," Ledioyt said.

Some local ice fishermen and people playing on the ice are thinking about better safety plans now.

"You got to be careful. You got to watch for things like that. You get a couple (of) warm days (and) the shores can open up real easy," Jim Moeller said.

"You can also buy floats for your four-wheeler, I'm looking into that so that if it does go through, it floats," Simo Gruichich added.

This is the second local man who died after falling through thin ice this winter.

Steve Kellerman, 41, and two friends went into the water while riding ATVs on Fox Lake a few days before Christmas. Kellerman did not survive.
