I was out cutting trails today, and while I was out, I had a project my daughter gave me.  She wanted 30 slabs of wood to use for center pieces on the tables at her wedding in June.

It's red oak. The tree was broke half way up by a bigger tree that fell on it.

Hunting is not life and death. It is more important than that.

how thick are those pieces??? we did that with black walnut. about 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick and it split. not sure how oak responds??? maybe if you put then in garbage bags so they dry a bit slower may prevent cracking!

I first tried cutting them thin (about an inch to inch 1/2) but the bark wouldn't stay on. So I went to 2 inches.  Yeah, I'm not sure if they will crack or not. I plan on coating them in poly.

They are laying on the garage floor right now. And, I'm hoping some of my wino friends donate some bottles.

Looks great.  Love it when they want to use some outdoor stuff.  Shouldn't be a problem finding wine bottles.

might be a lot of work but try sanding the side your going to poly with a fine sandpaper...should bring the grain out better.
