With the dry weather all over the Midwest it's time to swing into action. Keep an eye on the weather and watch for heavy rain predictions. That's easier said than done these days. The price of nightcrawlers should be at an all time high the way it's looking.

Any excuses for the main bait distributer  to take advantage of the independent bait shops will come as it does every year. We have shortages! There may not be any more leeches soon. Sorry but, you'll only be able to buy them by the dozens.

I just got back from nightcrawler hunting this morning since it rained all night. Not a heavy rain but, enough to bring the crawlers out on to the pavements. I never hunt in the grass when I can scoop them up off the pavement. It was only in the mid 40's with a stiff breeze this morning.

Anyhow I wound up with 275 crawlers. That's just a starter because they were just medium size..
With my 2 types of worm bedding and worm food to follow they will be good-ins by the time the season starts. The first time the crawlers start to appear they are not the mega ones. Warmer temps and rain will bring out the megatrons soon.

 I went out last night with a flashlight lookin.All I saw was 5-6 skinny ones.Course it was blowing and cool.We normally pick 20-24 dozen in the least grassy areas.
 We had 1/2 inch a rain and I had to check it out.

Hey dew,

Try collecting those early spring crawlers. Even if they are typically smaller give them a shot. With proper worm bedding, temps, worm food (powdered chicken mash)and moist bedding (not to wet) bingo. You'll wind up with some nice plump crawlers. It takes a while but it will happen!
