Fishing Report Lakes Oahe/Sharpe Pierre Area August 9th 10th and 11th 2015

Guided a real nice fellow that used to live in Pierre and moved over to Mn. He got his limit of walleyes on a cut short trip because of illness at home. We caught the walleye on the lower end of Oahe fishing deep as in the previous report using around 2 0z bottom bouncers in an average depth of around 50 fow. I am like most guides in that I prefer to find the fish shallow for several reasons. One is mortality rate on released walleye is much higher when you bring up little fish from these depths. This means you are going to have to keep fish that you might release if caught them shallow. Another reason is more tangled lines if you turn to sharp or if someone lets out a little to much line or reels in when the boat is turning. Other things like feeling bite's come into play so most of us will try to fish shallow whenever possible however there are times that going deep is the best option to come in with limits. I try to make that my last option after looking shallow for fish that have come up from the deep. Fishing is good on both Oahe and Sharpe with Sharpe easier to get numbers but the size of the fish when you find them is still better on the big lake. Almost all presentations including lead core line/plug fishing, minnows. chub's and leeches will put fish in the boat. If you are catching numbers and releasing a lot of fish presentations like trolling plugs or spinner fishing along with minnow fishing and gulp fishing will give you a somewhat better chance to release fish. These presentations seem to have less deep hooked fish than slow fishing nightcrawlers etc. It is August so summer weather can be on the hot side and fly's/bugs are around some days so plenty of liquids and good repellent can make for better safer trips. We did not picture the last trip so I will send in a picture of my new rig. Lots of room and a real smooth, dry ride.
