Duluth’s city bowhunt for deer:

* The hunt, authorized by the city, has been held every year since the fall of 2006. It is conducted for the city by the Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance.

* This fall’s season opened Saturday and will continue through Dec. 31, concurrent with Minnesota’s statewide archery deer season.

* Because the Duluth city deer hunt is designated a Metro Deer Management Unit, hunters may take an unlimited number of antlerless deer in the hunt with proper permits. Hunters may take one buck in the hunt, but they must shoot an antlerless deer before taking a buck.

* A total of 375 hunters have been registered to take part in Duluth’s city deer hunt this fall.

* Last year, 353 hunters registered 446 deer in the city hunt.

* A total of 5,201 deer have been registered by hunters in the 10 years of the hunt. Of those, 4,374 (84 percent) were antlerless deer.

* Duluth city deer hunters shoot an average of 1.4 deer per season, according to the Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance. Outside the city, Minnesota bowhunters shoot a deer, on average, once every seven or eight years.

* Phillip Lockett, chairman of the Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance, is optimistic about this fall’s city hunt. “I think we’re going to have a good year,” Lockett said. “I’ve seen a lot of fawns and a lot of deer around. They came through the winter pretty good.”
