DNR announces first spring burning restrictions; will start March 28 in Beltrami County

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will start burning restrictions starting Monday in various areas around the state.

The open burning restrictions will take effect in a portion of Cass County, south of the Chippewa National Forest boundary.

In the past few weeks, firefighters have already responded to wildfires in central Minnesota as conditions for fire have increased, according to a release from the DNR.

The following countries are also affected: Aitkin, Anoka, Benton, Carlton, Chisago, Crow Wing, Dakota, Douglas, Hennepin, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Pine, Pope, Ramsey, Scott, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, Wadena, Washington and Wright.


The anticipated date for the northern part of state is March 28. Those counties include Beltrami, Clearwater, Mahnomen, Becker, Hubbard, Cass, the portion north of the Chippewa National Forest boundary; Itasca and St. Louis.

Spring open burning restrictions mean residents will not be allowed to burn brush or yard waste. Restrictions typically begin about two weeks after the snow leaves and remain in place until summer green-up occurs, which typically lasts four to six weeks. In Minnesota, most wildfires occur during April and May and more than 95 percent are caused by people, the DNR said.
