Wow.  That is way cool.  I usually skip opener due to all the idiots.  Might try to get to vermillion this year.  It's a bucket list lake that I need to check off my list.  When do the smallies start on the top water bite?  How much for a half day chasing smallies with me and a kid or 2?

I have always wanted to know about camping on the islands on Vermillion. How does someone go about it? Are they even open to public camping? Can you rent campsites? Is there a safe place to park your truck for a week?

Hey Dad, I have had good topwater bites as early as opening day, however I would say early to mid June would be the peak of the shallow water topwater action. There are always a few that you can fool with a topwater but I think the first couple of weeks in June are the most consistent.  My half day rate for you and the kids would $250 and that includes everything you need to fish. If you are interested just know that June books up fast.

I have always wanted to know about camping on the islands on Vermillion. How does someone go about it? Are they even open to public camping? Can you rent campsites? Is there a safe place to park your truck for a week?

Hey HD, there are still some islands you can camp on here on the east end and there is a DNR camp ground on Hinsdale Island that is first come first serve. They are all primitive site but they have tables, Bear boxes and fire pits. They are free to use. There are a few islands on the east end that are marked as public sites, many of the houseboats park on them and all they have is a fire ring.  There are a few mainland camp sites as well and the new state park has some primitive sites on the lake. There are a few places that will rent you a parking spot and I'm sure they are all pretty safe.  You'll have to make some calls for prices. We also have to private camp grounds on the east end. McKinley park campground is run by the city of Sudan and the HooDoo point campground is run by the city of Tower.

The ones on the east side that are marked as public, are the ones I'm interested in. Those I suppose are not able to be reserved? And I heard that the DNR ones are hard to get times in, and it's a gamble if you can get one.

Hey HD, the DNR sites are first come first serve. If you come midweek or on a non holiday weekend it isn't always full. As for the ones on the east end you are right, there is no way to  make a reservation. I think it's pretty rare to see them all filled, even on a holiday weekend. Most people go for the public campgrounds these days. I'm willing to bet that a campsite can be found somewhere on the east end, especially early or late in the season.
