Winter makes a comeback today, but signs of spring are everywhere.
March 16th, 2016

Welcome to our website from all of us here at La Tourell's Resort & Outfitters. Whether you're a past customer of ours or a someone that is looking at visiting us for the first time, we hope this site is helpful to you. We'll be regularly updating the site with forest conditions, fishing reports, and other helpful information. Enjoy!

Today saw the return of some winter conditions here in Ely.  We're receiving about a foot of wet, sticky snow that has the trees bending over and is causing a much more wintery feel than we've had recently.  The kids even had their first day off from school for a snow day this year.  Even though this wet snow makes it seem like winter will be around for awhile yet, last week's temperatures around 60 degrees really moved conditions in our area towards spring.  The ice conditions have started to deteriorate and until today we had lost a majority of our snow in the woods.  Our overall conditions this winter and spring point towards an early spring and ice out.  We'll keep this site and our facebook page updated with current conditions as we approach our open water season.

Some other signs of spring have been showing up lately.  I've seen a few bald eagles return this month, as well as a small group of geese this week.  The ruffed grouse are becoming more active and soon we'll hear their spring drumming activities.  As more areas of open water around rivers and small ponds begin to show up, more and more waterfowl will return as well.

Even with the overall snowfall this winter being lower than normal, forest and lake conditions should be pretty healthy as our opening in May arrives.  We had some good moisture in December and the rain and snow we've had this week should help to keep the lakes full and the woods moist during our spring ice breakup.

Looking towards this coming season, we've been busy talking with many of you about your plans to visit our area.  For both cabin availability as well as permit application deadlines, it is best to contact us at your earliest convenience to secure your preferred dates.  The permit application process is in full swing, and there are starting to be some dates that are filling up.   Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you would like to make any arrangements.

Some of the finest wilderness fishing one could ask for is on Basswood Lake in the BWCA. You can portage into Basswood lake with your boat through Prairie Portage. It's operated by the La Tourell family and It's a great set up. :happy1:

Here's a video on how it works:

We're open during the open water season, with the cabins open from mid May to the end of September.  I was just out on the ice this morning...it'll be a bit yet before we see open water here.  However the ice isn't too thick this spring and it'll go quick when we get some warmer weather.  Its been below freezing most nights lately, but it won't be long now.

thanks for the response!!! just curious though, being in the Ely area isn't there any demand for places to stay for the ice season or hunting seasons you can cater to????

There are some resorts in Ely that do stay open, but the majority close down.  There are some great snowmobile trails and some ice fishing opportunities and a few places stay open that are located where there are the snowmobile trails.  There isn't as much winter traffic, though, so most do close down.  For ourselves, we aren't located anywhere near a snowmobile trail and the lake we are on is mostly in the wilderness area which doesn't allow winter motorized travel, even in the areas where 25 hp motors are allowed in the summer.
