As much as I would love to get first crack at those walleyes, I just can't get myself to even attempt to deal with the crowds that are going to be there...I am thinking about going to Winnie for the weekend then hitting Red on Monday Tuesday.? I know there are some out there that are braver than I, who are you crazy rastards?

I'll be on Mille Lacs again for opener, last year was the first opener on Mille Lacs i missed in 14 years. There is no way I'd fish URL on the opener unless I had a cabin and could launch the boat a couple days before. I would love to sit at the launch with a video camera and a cooler full of beer though.

Well I won't be there. It'll prolly be a zoo but on the other hand I don't think it'll be as bad as most think. Looking at it you'd only be able to keep 2 walleye and I'm thinking most people have a better lakes where they can keep more fish. My thoughts.

A two fish limit is small, but you might catch 50 fish per day per person.  I'll take that over working hard for 3 or 4 on Mille Lacs.

I agree. It's not how many fish you put in the frying pan but rather the good times spent on the lake.

I'm going!?

Only because I reserved a cabin at the state park and can leave my boat in the water on the river and not have to deal with the fiasco at the public landings.? I can also fish the river for those eyes if the wind decides to blow to much.

I am not just going for the walleyes though,? Like Scott said, It will be a walleye, crappie, big pike trolling adventure.? It will be sweet to have a roof over my head too!

I just can't justify the 5 hour drive to fish. I'll be on Mille Lacs as usual. That'll give me 6 more hours of fishing. Or I can sleep in and head up for the night bite.

We will be on the little lake of Pelican as usual. Not many fish, but a good time.

I also agree, that is far. You need to make a long weekend out of it. We rented a shack for 24 hours last year and that was just way too short for the drive. Fishing was great though, caught some monster crappies!

Really looking forward to the opener as usual though. Last two years on Mille Lacs we walked away with a big zero, but we'll be back! Not sure how much time we actually spent fishing but we had a good time, thats what opener is, a good time. You won't see me up at the crack of dawn, I'll save that for the weeks to come ;)

I wont be there. no way. I dont want to be playing bumper boats. You will probably see alot more families or large groups though, an extra 2 fish per person. ;)

Hey SSN, I love that avatar.

I've seen it before on an icefishing shanty board.

Are you the same guy who uses it there (archbishop from NY) ?

I agree that it is for the fun and good time, but I think there are alot who won't go on account of 2 fish limit. Myself think Dr. Bob has a good plan. I just don't think it's going to be the zoo that others are thinking, we'll see.

I will be there. We have a spot where we can pull up our boats in front of the cabin. There just happens to be a very popular boat landing right in front. This will be our fifth year and the action at the landing is worth the price of admission.  8)

Thank you Jigglestick!  I've been going to URL since I was a wee little one.  My grandpa bought a cabin along the Tamarack in the early 60's, my parents bought the place next to them in the 80's.  Now I get to share the outdoors with my kids.  Gotta love spending time in God's country (the great outdoors).  I hope to see you on the lake sometime.  If not on the lake, maybe at the WW.

Welcome OJ!

I'd be happy to join you guys at the WW if you don't mind :).

I'll be staying on the river for opener so if you see an ugly old light blue 18' Lund with a 40 hp Mariner on the back along with two kids, a Golden Retriever and a plump gray bearded old fart driving it, please stop and say hello? ;D.  I'll buy you a beer if you'd like.

It's got personality alright!? And its gonna have a lot more by the time I get done with it :o.

I pulled it out of the snow bank this morning and am going to start putz'in with is soon.? I can hardly wait to put her into service.? I only got to drive it from the dock on the river out to the mouth on the lake and back last year when I got it from you.? I am really itching to give her a whirl this spring.? I hope by then it'll be a lean mean trolling machine? ;D.

Well maybe not so lean ::).

I'll be there with my digital and video camera!!!  What are the chances of ever seeing this many boats on the lake at the same time.  Hopefully it won't be windy...I been there and done that too...Is there a ritural in the summer or spring to have the crappie gods bless us with success??  Is there any ritural for the walleyes??

If its like the last few openers, windy, cold, rainy. It will be tough and dangerous getting out on that shallow lake for many smaller boats. :o Even though I have a big boat I would rather pick the time I go up according to the weather forecast. And when I say weather forcast I mean deciding the day before because thats about how far out I trust the weathermen on T.V. ::)

No matter how the weather turns out.  The West Wind is warm and dry inside!  Win-win situation, when heading to Red.

You're right, except,
I would rather go fishing and then sit in the bar. Instead of sitting in the bar and wondering if I can get out fishing. Thats why I" try" to pick the dates to go fishing and not let the calender dictate. But the opener of anything is different.I have to go. ;D Lots of good times everywhere. :D
