CO Report: Officers observe trappers during fisher/marten season.

Dec 9, 2016 at 9:26 p.m.

 :police: ....
CO Mark Mathy (Cass Lake) reports a few trappers and hunters are still out while the lakes remain ice free in the area. Upcoming cold forecast in the weather should have the lakes producing ice soon. Enforcement action was taken on a felon possessing a firearm and a separate warrant arrest.
CO Duke Broughten (Longville) spent the week monitoring hunting and trapping activity. Few muzzleloader deer hunters and trappers were observed this week. Lack of snow and ice has limited winter recreational activity. CO Broughten followed up on cases from firearms deer season and submitted reports to the county attorney.

CO Jeff Halverson (Staples) worked muzzleloader season and checked trappers. Officer Halverson also registered fisher fur for the local trappers. Contacts were made for not checking traps and wanton waste.

CO Chelsey Best (Remer) worked muzzleloaders, trappers, and some recreational vehicles. Two out-of-season fisher cases were worked with other officers. Enforcement action was taken for an all-terrain vehicle operating on a state highway at high speeds.

CO Tim Collette (Pequot Lakes) checked muzzleloader hunters and trappers. The officer assisted with the first fur registration day where very few furs were brought in. Complaints of dumped deer were investigated and a fisher accidentally caught after the season was seized.

CO Jim Guida (Brainerd 2) worked with DNR Parks and Trails staff to monitor a trespassing complaint adjacent to the Paul Bunyan State Trail as a result of numerous low hanging and broken limbs and obstacles due to last large snowfall. The snow has melted and area trail volunteers were able to clear the trail for any upcoming use. Off-trail travel was observed and three juveniles were sent home to their parents. Officer Guida cleared an illegal tree stand and hunter from a restricted use Aquatic Management Area and investigated a muzzleloader deer hunter under the influence of alcohol.

CO Randy Posner (Brainerd) reports he worked on fishing enforcement this past week.

There were even a few ice anglers out who he checked after they got off the ice; they report a slow northern bite. Officer Posner checked goose hunters on the fields along the Mississippi and Crow Wing rivers; the hunters report lots of migrating birds. He checked muzzleloader deer hunters and also checked a complaint of baiting. He worked on complaints of deer carcass dumping and wanton waste. He also checked a grouse hunter; success was poor.

CO Patrick McGowan (Pine River) patrolled for late season muzzleloader and waterfowl hunters. Muzzleloader hunters reported a slower success rate. CO McGowan also assisted local law enforcement agencies with calls for service.

CO Sam Hunter (Park Rapids) checked trappers, hunters and ATVs. Officer Hunter received a call of motorized vehicles in non-motorized areas. CO Hunter received phone calls regarding muzzleloader questions and questions on trapping.

CO Bob Mlynar (Aitkin) worked muzzleloader, grouse, and trapping activity. Time was also spent at Savanna Portage State Park with the special hunt.

CO Gregory Verkuilen (Garrison) checked some deer hunters for muzzleloader and archery hunting seasons. Trappers were making the most of the six-day fisher/marten season. Officer Verkuilen also monitored ATV traffic, answered Mille Lacs Lake questions, and responded to a property damage complaint.
