Went to Sara for a few crappies on Saturday and Sunday. The action was good but not great. The fish seemed to prefer a spoon with a whole minnow on it. Sometimes it took movement after a period of no movement to get the fish to bite. For a while I could not get any to bite while holding the rod as still as I could but as soon as I would set it down on the cooler, it would start bouncing.
There was a pretty good section of the west part of the lake that was open Saturday and looked quite a bit more open on sunday. The area we fished had about 7" of good ice under the refrozen snow. The fish were biting really light but at least was I was able to stay on them most of the time. I counted over 100 holes drilled when we left. GOTTA FIND THE FISH!

yes, you are right, the key to finding crappies is to cover ground...er ice.
you can either wait for them to come to you, which they may or not, or you can start looking. I taught my son how to do that last year and now he wants to search for fish with the locater all the time.
it helps when they are successful once in a while. makes it easier to keep trying even when you have been burned a couple times. it helped for him that last year we were on aggressive, but moving fish. they were there and we knew it, but they were on the move. we kept hole hopping until we found them, then we would drop a lure and catch the snot out of them. then they would move again and we would have to go search nearby holes to see which way.

I used to fish this lake alot! I can tell you this about that lake there is a state record bass there....Ive seen it.

This Zach guy you speak of is he by chance a Pilot?

Out in Greenfield off of Hwy 55

Off of highway 55 just before you get to Rockford. I gave it a shot again yesterday. It was nice when it was 30 below and no crowds. Went out yesterday and there seemed to be about 200 shaks out there. I pulled some nice eater crops out and saw a friends wife pull out a 14.5" white. After the crops, i did more drilling and exploring and found a honyehole of bull gills, some over 8.5". The crappies took quite a bit of finessing but the bulls were ravenous and active. I sat on them until I got bored and went home. The bulls were hammering the minnows or waxies. It didnt matter. FIshing depths between 19 and 40 ft. I think Im going to head out now and be done b4 the crowds show again. There is plenty of tie for sleeping when Im dead!
Tim, give me a shout. Wondering if you are coming out or heading back to where you were yesterday.
