Out of the blue, a job offer fell in my lap that I have taken.  I will be starting on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and the ophthalmology clinc is in Baxter.  It's been a dream of mine to move to the Brainerd area ever since I relocated here from Ohio.  It's gonna be nice to get out of the Twin Cities for once and for all.  Looking forward to lots of fishing on lakes I've wanted to try for the longest time.  Also looking forward to lots of grouse hunting and new deer hunting spots too.  It may be time for me to finally break down and get a Brittany.  I've had several labs over the years, but I think I'm ready for something a little smaller.

My wife supports this move wholeheartedly.  We are looking at houses in the Baxter/Brainerd area.  We've been up once and will probably go up again this Friday.  If any of our members live up there and want to match up for a coffee some time, just let me know.  There'll be room in the boat next spring too.  Looking forward to fishing the Whitefish chain, lots of small less well known lakes, and Leech is only an hour away.  Can't wait!

My dream as well. My wife is from Brainerd. I love it up there and we are up in the area just about every weekend at our camper in the summer.  To bad she just sold her mom's very nice house that passed away in Baxter about a week ago. Lot's of nice homes in the west part of Baxter north of 210. I would move there instead of in Brainerd.  Good Luck.

Congrats GG. We made the move up north about 13 years ago. Little further though. Lake of the woods. It would take hell and high water to get me to move back down to the cities. Good luck toy ya!

Congrats GG, good for you :happy1: , still a bit too close to TC's for me. When we're not down here(NE Ia) we spend the rest of our time, 8-9 months, up ~ 40 miles NW of Grand Rapids near glenn & not far from Big Winnie. Been goin there since 63-64 & went year round in 2011-2012

The Brainard area is a great place for most outdoor activities.  Paul Bunyan trail starts there and goes all the way to Cass Lake.  Many, many great fishing and recreational lakes within a short drive.  A little busy in the summer but there are lots of places out of the way.  It's your gateway to everything north.  Really cool, good for you.

Hey GG, congrats on the new job.  :happy1:
As a current Brainerd resident, it is a nice area to live in for a large part of the year, you will get sick of all the tourists in a few years. It is a bit of an economically depressed area, lots of jobs but few that pay well. Just as a suggestion, stay away from Baxter or as the locals call it Taxter, the tyrant government.
Lets grab a cup of java sometime.

To be truthful though, Brainerd city proper is old with higher crime.  Baxter's taxes are higher because it is booming and growing.
You are right about us visitors clogging the roads in the summer though.  I do all I can to stay away from hwy 371 and 210 intersection on the weekends!  :bonk:   :rotflmao:

I'm a dispensing optician.  30 years in this industry doing lab work, lab installation, lab management, dispensing, and dispensary management.  The position is for a dispensing optician with chances to advance.  I'm 57, so this is my last stop before retirement.  Hoping to get in a good 10 years and hang it up.

Sounds like a plan.  I'll be back in touch once we get settled in.  Looking like we won't be into a house by the time I start up there, so I'll be doing the motel thing for a week or two, depending on when we can close on a house.

Thanks for all the supportive replies guys.  I'll be looking for some new spots to deer hunt.  The wolves are doing a number on our deer herd over by Emily.  Hoping to knock on a few doors and find some  private property to hunt, but public land's plentiful up there, so we'll find something.

Gonna get a new used boat in the spring, and yes, it will be a red Lund. I'm still kicking my self for ever getting rid of my old 14 footer, but it was just getting too hard to clamber around the bench seats for me.  I've got an old Sylvan now.  Very comfortable fishing platform, but heavy, and hard for me to handle. The 75 hp. Johnson doesn't have trim and tilt, and it's all I can do to hoist that big old motor.  I'll go back to a Lund. I think a 16 footer, and definitely an open floor plan. Tiller steer would be okay, but I'd prefer console steer.  We'll just have to see what's available in the spring.

Yesterday, we came to agreement on purchasing a house we found in Baxter.  The closing will be next Wednesday, and we will take possession of the house immediately after the  closing.  Just in time for me to start working the Monday after Thanksgiving.  We'll be moving our selves over the  next couple weeks.  Lots of runs back and forth between Baxter and the Twin Cities as we empty out our house down here.  Cathy will be  holding down the fort in the cities for a few  weeks.  We hope to sell this house as soon as possible.  A friend of my son's is very interested in buying the house, so  we hope that moves forward.

Looks like things are falling into place for you.  I don't envy the moving part though.

We met with him today, and amazingly that's going forward too.  Can't believe how all these moving parts are falling together like this.

We're going to do this move without paying movers.  We'll drive my wife's van and my Explorer back and forth with full loads every time.  Cathy's gonna be down here till right before Christmas.  We want to be fully moved before the 25th.

We close on the house tomorrow.  My Exploder's in for some repairs, so we'll be going up with a full load in the van.  We get the house immediately after closing as their stuff's all cleared out of the house.
