Minnesota Conservation Volunteer honored for editorial excellence

Minnesota Conservation Volunteer (MCV), published by the Department of Natural Resources, has been recognized as one of the best magazines in state by the Minnesota Magazine & Publishing Association.

Among other honors, the reader-funded magazine took home a gold award for editorial overall excellence. Judges’ comments about the award included: “Great photography, compelling editorial … nice range.”

Associate editor Michael A. Kallok’s story “Hungry for Hex” (May-June 2010), a first-person account of fishing during a legendary mayfly hatch, won an award for Best Feature Article.

Managing editor Gustave Axelson’s feature story “The Alpha Accipiter” (March-April 2009), was selected for inclusion in Houghton Mifflin’s anthology of the The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2010.

“We are honored to receive such prestigious awards,” said Kathleen Weflen, editor-in-chief. “We thank our readers for supporting Minnesota Conservation Volunteer with encouraging words and generous contributions.”

“This state and national recognition is an ideal opportunity to broaden readership and support for the DNR’s magazine, mission, and MCV’s goal of encouraging conservation and careful use of Minnesota’s natural resources,” she added.

Used the search tab to find this. Anyone else get this magazine?? Just got the sept-oct use today. Paging through it they have an article on the CO officers and there dogs in it. Mr Fairbanks and his dog Si are one of the 3 in the article.

Just received the latest edition yesterday in the mail. Haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Some very good strories and information in it.

last nite i read that article about the CO's and their dogs. that was a pretty sweet article. pretty awesome what them dogs can be trained to do!!!!!!!!!

Bet they're A LOT easier to train than some 2 legged types!!

Had a game warden friend now retired from washington county that had the 1st k-9 partner in minn,"shep" was his name,reject from our st paul police but great dog,friendly out side his kennel but don't touch wardens truck,damn almost got my arm tore off one day,very protective,I remember shep was trained to sniff 5 different narcotics,gun powder,and game hunter's would try to hide wilst over limit etc.,great asset for our folks in blue and green.

my place of work sponsored our st paul police with a young belgium pup,$7k several years ago,these dogs are scary mean,well trained.went to said pup's graduation for police work after 9 months of training,very impressive how well they work with handler.

Anyone interested it watching a great k-9 police demonstration,this is worth checking out,its free unless you want to shoot,ammo is supplied to shooters if so.
