Minnesota Wild Fires~

You folks up north still getting the smoke?,between canada and some of our northern regions still big fires.

Thinking back years ago,we roamed the BWCA  heavy,from our entry point on moose lake near ely then travel the lakes and portages to saganga,zig zaging the entire way fishing there and back to moose lake,I remember many area's with miles of downed tree's way back in the bush from inline winds or maybe tornado's?,guessing today just a major accient/fire waiting to happen,kinda like all the pine beetle kill across the rockies in colorado on fire today.

lightening strike or a careless camper is all it would take.down side is how would our folks harvest these area's as no motorized vehicles allowed.

It's been sort of clear the last 2 days.  Maybe a little haze but not like it was.

We have had South winds lately so the Canadian smoke isn't a factor. However, it's very dry and won't take much spark to get things going. We desperately need rain without lightning.

Someone please explain this to me:  I see the DNR just added a bunch of counties to the list that are prohibited from having campfires.  I was planning to have a campfire at my place this coming weekend, but fine.  However, at the bottom of the DNR notice it says "excluding tribal trust lands".  How does that work?  Do they water tribal trust lands so they don't present a fire danger?  Are Indians more careful with fire than everyone else?  If I want still want to have a campfire, do I just find some tribal trust land to have it on? I'm so confused.

the fires must know the borders......... if they dont have to follow along our government best not help put there fires out either............ just saying.

Maybe they should just pitch in and help. How many fire trucks for a Casino share?

Thanks for the replies.  I think I've got it.  If we were to ban campfires on Indian land, it would trample their cultural treaty rights to start forest fires.  Good to know that the fire will stop at the border of the trust land if one gets out of control.  Just to be sure, I also emailed the DNR my questions.

I'm sure the Tribe has a fast fire responses team and tanker planes to fight any fires they start, with their own money!

I just got the local paper and the fires you mentioned JB are still going.  There are about 85 personnel fighting it now.  Some even from Ohio are here.  Planes and a National Guard chopper are busy helping dump water and chemicals on it.  One is NW of Graceton and one South of Roosevelt by Norris Camp.  Neither one is contained yet.  They are both around 80 acres.  Been in the 90's for a week and strong winds every day.  Bad weather to fight fires.

Yeah, this hot weather does not make fighting fires any easier. Surprised we haven't seen the smoke from the Graceton fire. Not that far away from us.

With all the gear and heavy clothes...I'd croak. My cuz is a retired firefighter for Diablo Canyon Ca. FD. Said up and down those hills, pulling the hoses and fighting brushfires in the 80* heat is unreal. 90* degrees I can't even imagine.
