Wife & I will be visiting Minneapolis from Tennessee later this month and will have at least one day free to get outside... need to find a state park, resort, or someplace where we can get out of the city and maybe see some wildlife.  Looking for a fishing guide too, anyone have any suggestions?  Might be able to make it an overnight trip from the big city, schedule is still unset.  Thanks!

Yes, here's a suggestion. Come back to do all the fun stuff Minnesota has to offer, when you have more time.   :happy1:

Coming back when we have more time is definitely in the long-range plan, we didn't realize how far it is up to the north shore area... but we'll make the best of the few days we have.  Maybe a state park for a night or two?  What do you all think?  Seeing some live wildlife would be nice, we have bear in TN but not near us.

North shore drive of lake superior up scenic hwy 61 is a beautiful drive, stop in two harbors for smoked fish or other goodies nice family owned business,"Russ Kendals" shop is a worthy stop, they're brown sugar cured salmon/lake trout is the best just have a roll of paper towel along, then further north little town of grand marais, consider a drive up the gunflint trail, spend the night in town if time allows, the trail is about 60 miles of wilderness, most often you'll see moose, deer, possible bear....fishing resorts at trail end, maybe setup a fishing trip next time up,this time of year have bug spray handy if you plan to hike anywhere....

Oh might consider stopping at Lutsen ski area just before grand marais, take a chairlift ride up to the top of the ski area over looking lake superior, very scenic view on a clear day.

thanks!  Grand Marais looks kinda far for even a single overnight, probably have to save that one for next trip.  Getting some really interesting options, too.

Might not be as likely to see wildlife, but if your time is limited, going north out of the Twin Cities on I-35 to Highway 23 and taking 23 to the northeast will put you in Duluth. Really pretty drive through Jay Cooke State Park just south of Duluth. You can spend a little time in Duluth and head up Highway 61 along the north shore of Lake Superior as far as you care to go. Back into Duluth you can take Highway 53 or Highway 194 west to Highway 73 and do some exploring of the Iron Range around Hibbing, Chisholm, and Virginia. Again, not so much wildlife, but some good scenery and interesting stops to see abandoned pit mines that are now lakes and other historic things, as well as state parks along the North Shore with waterfalls.
