At least i know he is not quite ready yet!

Alex aka Lil Spinach went with me tonight for the last hour of daylight, he was very excited to see 10 deer on the way there.

We got to our property and I decided to hunt the apple orchard area, he lasted about 10 minutes in the blind before keeping very quiet was no longer an option, I kept saying you have to stay still and keep very quiet. After 10 minutes he started making deer noises like he was calling the deer, I asked him what he was doing and he said "thats what you do dad" then he realized that he didn't have a gun and asked "But, I don't have a gun, what happens if we see some deer?"

Alex is only 4 years old, so I wasn't surprised. We never did see any deer from the blind, but the feeling of hunting with my son was priceless.

Less than 8 more years to go!

My daughter is 12 and will be taking her gun safety this next spring, she will be hunting next season.  :party1:

I know what you mean.  My oldest is 11 and he turns 12 this spring.  We both can't wait for next year!

I know the feeling.  I took my 5 year old out last weekend and he made it about 20 minutes.  He was excited about the thought of going hunting though.  On the way out he picked up my dad's 30/30 and asked if that was his gun.

I love hunting with my oldest son and now I get the chance to take my middle child.  He's 11 now and hasn't spent any time in the woods.

My oldest has found the love of hunting that many of us share and now I hope my middle child will.  Im taking my 11 year old out bow hunting Friday after Thanksgiving for about 1/2 a day or so.  We'll see how he does.

I am lucky enough to borrow a ground blind (from Kenhunting -- thank you sir) so I won't have to use pegs and hang 2 stands.  We should be very comfortable.  Now if the kid can be quiet, we stand a decent chance of him having fun.

I dream of all 3 of my kids getting into hunting and fishing and it become a family tradition.  Step one - let them have fun.

Hunting with my daughter has been a slow progresion. I started her off with rabbits in the back yard when she was 3.  I would see a rabbit out the back door of the house and she would be putting her boots on while I was loading the 22.  We then started on trips to the woods in search of mushrooms. She has a great eye for the morels.  In the fall we tried our hand on squirrels when she was 5.  She could bearly sit for 10 min. that first year. Lucky for us a young squirrel could only sit still for 9 min.  She has just turned 10 and wants to start shooting. It is very hard to not let her shoot.  She has a BB gun and is very acurate with it.  She has also been shooting my 22 and as a reward for good grades my 243.  Does she have to be 12 to get her firearm certificate?
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

Hey good for you Dakids!   :happy1:  It may seem like a slow progression but in time when you look back at these years you'll wonder how it went by so fast.  If she's having fun at her age now, then I'd bet you got a hunting buddy for life.

2nd year bringing my 5 & 6 year old sons hunting. Found that if I bring them something to do like coloring or giving them binoculars to "find" deer or even curl up and take a nap -they are excellent. Hunted all day long opener and hardly a peep - Ended up passing on a smaller 10 point and didn't hear the end of that. 2nd day we only made it 15 minutes in the stand and an 11 pointer walked out 22 yards away. Wow are they hooked on hunting now. Sorry I'm having probs posting a pic but it is on the other forums.

Shaneydan,

Where about in the state do you hunt?  What part of MN are you from?  Awesome buck!  Those boys look very excited!  Congrats.

Took my 11 yo son out for the first time last year when he was 11..he is fired up about it, unfortunately we didn't get out this year (time commitments, grandpa not doing so well up north) but hopefully next year...nothing like hunting and fishing with your children!

Good for you Bid D and Shaneydan.  Keep getting those kids out there.  Even if its fishing they know their part of the "cool club" and it does wonders for their self confidence.

Sorry to hear about Grandpa but the boys have to know what comes first -- family.

I'm from the Grand Marais area. God's country some say. Here's a pic of another deer my buddy got that was shot within 400 yards of my 11 point. It took a few years but there's something to be said about deer management and passing up the little ones.
