I wouldn't go grouse hunting but one of my best times pheasant huting was opening firearm season. I had the place to myself. the deer hunters were all doing their own thing and never had a problem. never really saw too many around during the day. I was in the Marshall area.

As Im not a deer hunter or even a regular pheasant hunter for that matter, first timer, any recomendations?  Are deer hunters generally along tree lines and wearing orange?  Is there anything that I could do in an open field that might tick a deer hunter off?

I used to live in Ely.  Once firearm season opened, my grouse hunting days ended.  Too many inexperienced weekend warriors out shooting at sounds and branches that moved.  People have been shot walking to their mailbox.  Try walking quietly through the woods before blaze was around (even after blaze came in)!  Bullets hurt.

Good advise Dave...its not worth it...join em, or hide for a few weekends...get some yardwork done so you can get out later if weather permits....some yohan just shot a girls pony, said it had the markings of a deer, and it was on someone elses private land....somthin to ponder, is it worth it?       -thunderpout ;)

Now, I am probably in the minority but I have and will bird hunt during the deer season.  As I see it, they are deer hunting during my grouse season.  ;)    I always go during the week, wait until 9am and if I do see a truck parked or signs of a deer hunter I work away from them.  My dog has a bell on, I have plenty of blaze orange on I don't see why it would ever be a problem.  If anything, you would think someone getting into the big woods and moving deer around during the day would help.  Anyway, I try to be as respectful as I would expect were I in a tree stand.  And if I were deer hunting and saw someone bird hunting or trapping or whatever in the woods I would let them know I was there and wish them a good day.  I know its a lot to expect the same, but I still have faith in my fellow man.  Especially sportsman.

Im sure its our DNR not wanting to lose revenue to those who hunt in both MN & WI....they'd have to choose one or the other.  Ive never understood it, but I guess it always comes down to $$$...Man, I would LOVE to hunt grouse the first weekends in november, or the whole month for that matter, but I dont want to mess up a deer hunters day tromping thru their areas when they've waited all year to be in the peace and quiet of the woods , in there stand, as I wouldnt want it to happen to me... not to mention that its legal to shoot dogs if they are chasing deer, and that opens a loophole for a ticked off yohan to put his crosshairs on my dog...I just wont let it happen...again its not worth it to me, and grouse hunting is what I live for!  Wouldn't it be cool if there could be different areas, that would rotate year to year, where there would be no deer hunting, so ya could hunt grouse, and other things, and be safe doing it?( not to mention the bucks would have an extra year to get bigger and influence the genepool for another year...) But yeah I understand the desire to stay out there the whole year, as the woods are the grouse hunters world just as its the deer hunters.  I used to buck the deer season and TRY to hit areas void of deer hunters, or I'd sit and pout for a few weeks until deer season was done, till I gave in and started hunting deer in the firearms season with a buddy in their camp...plus It always seems I find new little grouse haunts to put "in my book" while scouting/hunting deer then ya make the last dash with what time ya got left in the season.  The way ya gotta look at it is in the big picture...there are not enough days for us on this earth to grouse hunt as much as I'd like...so make the most of the days you do have and enjoy em to the fullest! happy2.gif      -thunderpout 8)

This comment is not valid during the hunting seasons. I just wanted to make sure everyone understands that it is illegal to shoot a dog unless it is between Jan 1 and July 14th. Sorry T-pout  fudd.gif

I copied this from the regulations.....

Dogs Pursuing Big Game
No persons may allow their dog to chase or kill big game.
Between January 1 and July 14 a dog that is observed wounding,
killing, or pursuing in a way that endangers big game may be killed
by any person. A peace officer or conservation officer may kill a dog
that endangers big game at any time of the year. The officer or person
is not liable for damages for killing the dog.

Yeah but does every yohan in his deerstand know the rules, you had to look it up, right?  Are you willing to bet you or your dogs life on every blaze orange human in a tree fully knowing the deer hunting reg's?  Not I......... fudd.gif       -thunderpout 8)

Your absolutely right , most people do not realize this. I only commented to make sure everyone that reads this understands the way this law works. I also agree on not trusting some people in the woods that would use this loophole to shoot my dog. Thats one of the reasons i will not hunt my dog during firearms seasons.

I definitely was not calling you out on this, i was just trying to set the record straight with this confusing law.

I'm sorry if this offended you at all.

No offense taken... good to put it in print for the folks!  I just happen to know of some land owners that have taken out dogs, though on private property, and some were neighbors hunting dogs running loose that may or may not have been chasing deer, and some definatly not in the legal timeframe.... thats enough for me to cool my jets for two weekends!    -thunderpout 8)

  • Deer hunting/waking up in the morning.
If you go just use common sense, and have courtesy for all kinds of hunters.

I slug hunted in Marshall, MN (4A) this year.  I was on public property, and I thought it was tasteless that a pheasunt hunter was walking 20yds away with his yellow lab (no orange on the dog) at 8:30am opening morning.  It is only a 2 day season.  I could see 2 other deer hunters a few hunderd yards away and he walked right next to them too.  I don't know if he hunts 4B and that is why he was out there?
It is public land and I am thankful that I can hunt it, but it bumbed me out.
