I am heading out to do a little tip-up fishing tomorrow on Coon or Turtle Lake...anyone had any suggestions on which one migt be better for Northern's?  I haven't fished either...I am going to do a little research on the DNR site to see how the lakes are laid out.  Vados bait shop mentioned they are good local lakes (I live in Brooklyn Park) to fish.

If anyone has fished these lakes with success (tip ups, med sucker, northern fishing) let me know if you have any good locations or depths to fish on these lakes.... :fishing:.  Thanks

I was at Vados last Saturday and their staff now is no where near what it use to be (No offense to anyVados employees that were not working there on Saturday).  I was asking if anyone had any good reports on lakes close to the store and they told me to go to Rush Lake (its a one hour drive from Vados and had no recommendations) I have fished Coon Lake a year ago pretty quiet, but that was typical I have not fished it recently.  Lake Johana in Arden Hills/Shoreview area may be decent I have had a few buddies that have pulled out a few nice pike from there over the years.

If ye wants northerns, Hit Coon...the channel.... It used to be better, but its still ok I hear.... Turtle is more of a panfish & bass lake...           -thunderpout :happy1:

I decided to head out on Medicine Lake today...south side right off the beach.  I had 3 flags..landed 3 fish in 2 hours...pretty productive morning!  The biggest was a 3.5 lb northern....a lot of people out on the lake...good fishing at about 20-25 feet.

good luck

if you want to capture northerns and are opting between Turtle and Coon the answer is Coon.Coon should be called slimer lake because it is so full of northerns. Caution though the lake is aerated and only travel on safe routes. The ice on coon goes from 1" to 12"right now. And the stocked walleyes from recent years took well and are now catchable.

Here's is a little help if anyone heads to coon, One of the guys I work with lives on the lake. Yesterday he measured Ice at 18" he fishes pike in 6' of water. He started out with a nine # fish at 2:30 then caught 3 little ones. Then caught four more about 2# the last hour of daylight for a total of eight fish. He claims that was a real slow day   Watch out for the aerated area if you go.
