Yesterday I stood back in amazement looking at all that snow and beautiful blue sky and thought boy do I love this. Even though it was a bit chilly it was another awesome day working on the lake. I have been super busy and enjoying every minute even when mother nature kicks my hind end. we have not found the mother load of crappies but the walleye fishing has been fantastic at times. We are up to 32 crappies so theres still a few around.

Might not be like the old days of 1996-2003 but there are still plenty of Crappies in Red Lake, now you just have to work a little harder for them, move more and more and you'll find crappies. There are people catching Crappies on Red, but most are keeping it a secret compared to years past.

Back in the late 90's when the limit was still 15, we would leave the cities at 10am and get to Waskish around 3pm, on the lake and fishing by 3:30-4pm, 4 of us would have our limits in 20 minutes, so we turned around and drove home.

Those days are over, but Red Lake is still an awesome fishery for Crappies, too many non guides and business owners are making people think the Crappies are done.

I'm hoping to make it up once or twice in late March.

See you all then!

If you want to find Crappies you better plan you trip for late in the year. We need some warmer temps to come around and melt some of our snow cover. After the snow starts to melt off the ice and let the sun shine through, the Crappies are going to start to school up and then the fun starts. Till then I'll take a good Walleye bite to pass the time.

I was catching Crappies on Red back in 96. Your right though, word got out in 99 and thats when the crazy years started. My dad started making the trip to Red back in 1995, he invited me several times, but i didn't really believe him at the time, then i saw the Crappies he brought home and decided to make a run with him late in 1996.

Not disagreeing, just clarifying, very few people fished the lake for crappies before 1999.    I do remember Gary Rux from TRF fishing the rock piles west of Rogers for at least 8-10 years before the "Big Boom", he came in with limits of crappies and not too many anglers would even be interested.    You are right, the ones who did fish for them, usually did well.   just my 2 cents!!

Yeah, I should have clarified more. The boom started in 1999, but my personal boom started in 1996.  :dancinred:
