All my dogs have their dew claws removed.   Seen one dog tear one pheasant hunting and it wasn't pretty.  After seeing that, every dog will have his removed for sure.

Pups go into the vet at 3-5 days old and have them removed... quick pinch with the forceps and a little coterizing agent and they are good to go.

Good Luck!

If you can get them do. It is better. Like labs4me said 3-5 days. 3 being the best of these days.

My lab never had her dews removed and is now 11 months, can I still have it done or would you just recommend leaving them?  Thanks. :newhere:

i think  you do it when they are very yung like day or two old... if they still have them now and are around 11 months i would ask your vet im sure they can still be removed. but i would think you can not just clip them like you can when they are days old. ask your vet he will tell you what is best.

Hey Labs

Long time no see my friend..

take them to the vet at about 3 days old to get them done.. No you do not have to get it done, but with a hunting dog it is better for the dog, due to it catching on limbs brush and can pull it, cut into it  even tear it off and that can be bad and get a nail bed infection.. they are just like nails..like Labs said..

I got a husky when i was racing, and he was 13 months and the vet did his dews then, so i know it came be done.. If need be, he needed to. If removed later, it has to be done surgically under anesthesia, which is more dangerous for the dog. Just so you know...
the hurrier I go, the behinder I get
