Funny. Ha you might.
I remember it wasn't that long ago - maybe 10 years that Winny was half covered with ice for opener. The way we are going it could be worse than that year.

I wouldn't miss the opener for any reason other than a death in the family, and it would have to be my death.

I'll be on the best opening day Walleye lake I have ever fished. Lake Vermilion has been my choice for the last 28 years. I can't remember the last time we didn't get a limit on the opener. Our Sunday morning breakfast is always scrambled eggs with a few fresh Walleyes. Yummmy!

Opening day is Christmas and your birthday, all rolled up into one in my family. Sons and grandsons, old friends and lots of Walleyes. Friday night is for sitting around the firepit tellng lies and remembering past opening day stories from my granfather and father. I'm now the Old guy and I tell the same old stories to my grandsons that my father told me many years ago. They sit there all wide eyed and soak it all in and that is what opening day is all about.

The crowds at the ramp and at the bait store are just a part of what makes it all so special. How many times during the year do you see 3 or even 4 generations out in the boat fishing together. I think it's the best weekend of the entire year.

Call me sentimental if you want to. When you get to be my age, you'll understand even more the things that are really most important in life. In my family, opening day is right up there at the top.:happy1:

Ace,

I just loved your reply to this thread, it's absolutely my favorite!  I loved how you compared "opening day" to Christmas and your birthday all rolled up into one!  And you being sentimental about the whole thing just shows us all what a big heart you have, I love your attitude and how strong you feel about it being such a big event in your life.  How you change the crowds at the ramp from being a pain in the butt into something fun, is awesome.  I can tell your cup is always half full, you have a great outlook on life, anyone would be lucky to be in your boat on Opening Morning!!  Good luck to you and your family on this 08' Opener!  Here's to some more great stories to be told!   :toast:

I'm fishing West Norway, or Norway Lake, depending on where the bite is.  Well... that depends whether or not I get a decent weekend to get the dock and all in the lake.  I may have to take a couple days off work next week to get that taken care of.  What a great idea!!  I guess I could handle that.

Katoman,
You may have to fish the river instead. I hear they are still driving 4 wheelers on Rainy lake. It's about the same here on Vermilion.
I would be very surprised if the main lake opens up by May 10th.

Wisconsin opener.....Balsam Lake, if that is slow then check Loveless, then Cedar, then finish out at Deer lake for crappies... Repeat pattern on Sunday, or stay on whatever one is kicking them out.

MN opener, the Back yard, Chisago all the way for both days.  :dancinred: skip the traffic and slay the walters...

Good luck.

We've been there for Rudy Perpich and Jesse Ventura . Why not for Tim Pawlenty too.  We don't go out until they've been out awhile . Then we stay out long after they leave . We watched Jesse take off in a helicopter that one year .  It's never the crowd that we expect . Little busier than a normal opener . It'll be some cold water this year as it still has a sheet of ice on it . I'm confident that it'll be gone by the end of this week or over the weekend .
