Pheasant brood sighting

Last night as I was taking a drive on the backroads around home, I turned into the Montrose slough and what did I see?  A hen pheasant and her brood of chicks crossing the road.  I counted 10 little chicks and they looked really healthy.  This seems a little early to me so it must mean that they pulled off an early hatch with all the nice weather we had in April.

It should be a great year for pheasants. I haven`t seen any chicks yet, down here in Fairmont area but when driving the gravel roads, I see very few hens(sitting on nests) only the cocks standing at the side of the road strutting there stuff looking for that last love interest. Should be a successful nesting season, no torrential down pours and above average temps. The down side is that the first cutting of alfalfa has already started and that may destroy a lot of nests. Most farmers wait till the end of June before bailing road ditches, so hopefully most chicks will be hatched.

I just talked with a customer from Watertown and he commented about on his route throughout eastern S.D. and Western MN. many hens and roosters are being seen and now he is seeing hens with chicks.  Sounds good!!

I too have heard some great reports. I think this year will be better than the last.

Have a brood that is hanging around the driveway. No more tearing out the driveway for awhile. This yr should be great hunting.

I was wondering if anyone has seen any chicks near the road. I haven't seen any reports of hens and chicks lately and can only guess about the coming fall season. Here's to a great upcoming season.

Talked to a buddy yesterday and he said that near his home in western Mn there are birds everywhere. Has never seen it like this....they are everywhere!

I talked to"Dancing Bear" the other day and he had talked to one of his farmer buddies out in Westerm MN near Redwood Falls. He said the amount of birds that he has been seeing is unreal! I am pumped for this year. I think we will se more birds than lasy year. I already have opening day planned out

I did a western Minnesota trip last Saturaday and saw several pheasants near the road in the morning and then while returning in the evening.  Only saw one brood with 8 chicks.  These were sure small chicks for this late. Also saw several chicks that were half grown so there are several different brood hatchings.  Should be good hunting come fall.

 The hatch was real good this spring but lots have been lost around here due to predaters. I would still go out on a limb and say it should be the best hunting ever.
