Ely Ice Update

More lakes are opening up each day, but some of the large ones like Burntside have a way to go to make it by Saturday.

Snowbank has the bays open with the middle still full of ice. Denny at Smitty's figures that fishermen will be able to fish on parts of the lake, or with a good wind and some rain the lake may be mostly open.

Lake one was navigable yesterday, a group went to Basswood through Fall and Newton lakes. You can make it to Upper Basswood Falls, but Jackfish Bay was still locked up.

Moose Lake on the Moose chain toward Prarie Portage is still frozen as of this afternoon, and a strong wind will open Shagawa up in a day or two.

Dad declared Fall Lake to be open as of May 7.  Open is defined as being able to navigate from Winton to the 4-Mile, and able to put in at the landings and cabin areas.

Family records go back to the early 30's, and this is not by any means a record-setting late ice-out.  The average is roughly April 25-28, and the first week in May is well within the historical parameters.
