My other half and I need to get a fishing rod.  I was thinking of getting a combo rod/real.  We only fish a few times a year.  Just wondering if there is any one you might reccomend or any to stay away from.  I don't want to spend over $70 each if possible.

It has been along time since I have bought a rod and really don't have an idea on the cost.  My dad seems to have  taken over mine which is OK, then we take his boat out I have a double.

Thanks, Jewel

Do you have access to a Gander Mountain?

What do you mainly fish for? Are you looking for a spincasting reel or a spinning reel? I'll also put in a vote for Gander. The Guides Series rods and reels can be a great value.

No I dont have a Gander close but I was planning to head up to Walker and check out Reeds.

I typically fish for anything that will bite  ;D  But I hope for Walleyes, Northerns or larger fish.

"spincasting reel or a spinning reel", What is the difference between these??  Yes I am a bit dumb at times!  The type of reel I had before was open and you either pulled a little lever or fliped the metal deal up and casted, I sound like a moron!!  It was made by Pinnacle spl?

Check out gander on your way through to walker.  If you drive through brainerd, we are the left hand side across from Fleet Farm, right next to Cub, you cannot miss us! ( I work there so I push it ha ha ha).  anyways, I fish with guide series rods also, and love them.  I know they have some specials this weekend too on fishing stuff so you might have to stop and check them out.

If you want to pay the highest price for a combo then head to gander. Reeds is rapidly trying to come in second but there is still a couple of reasonable salesmen there. When buying off the shelf a cork handle is important and check the guides for any signs of stress like splits or light colored areas of the epoxy on the wrapping. so many dorks go into a store and pull the rod tip down to the handle like an ugly stick that your pole is shot when you buy it.

Thanks!!!!!  It is nice to know what to look for.  I know where Gander is in Brainerd  ;D and of course I do shop there.  Actually I got my 9mm there.  But I live an hour from there and about 30mns approx from Walker so its closer.
