Been having a great time with the smallies on the St. Croix and up at the lake in extreme norther WI.? Find the boulder fields off a good smallie river's main current and you can bet the fish will be there!
Last season I went with a Diamondback 10' 7wt. that takes care of the smallies, steelhead and salmon.? Really a good tool for flingin' wind-resistant poppers and deer hair flies.? Also, during the day hours when the sun is higher in the sky, try going subsurface with larger beadhead/conehead buggers w/ rubber legs.? Turns the fish on!? Cast them across the current and short-strip them in as the fly quarters down current.? Hang on, as the strikes are pretty vicious!
Keep those lines tight and always remember: Slack is evil...

Hey David,
Well, ah, heh, I was trying my hand with the 'effects' deal with my photo software.  I just thought it looked sorta cool, but on second thought, it sorta does suck, doesn't it? ;D
