Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 10/20/08

The big question, has the lake turned over yet? Theoretically Kabetogama does not turnover as one would think. The Kabetogama basin with draw down current flow gradually inverts and doesn't do an overnight inversion as some lakes are known to do.

The inversion or turnover is normally so gradual that the warmer and cooler layers of water intermix rather than flip flop, so this writer has been told.

Walleye bit still remains strong with a few more keepers showing up.(under 17"). The structures near the deeper waters seem to hold the best populations.

Martin Islands and Graves Island are a couple of good structure areas. Jig and minnow at 30-35' has been working well, and fish released after being caught at that depth seem to survive well.

Pike still prefer live bait, sucker minnow near the bottom or bobber fished in bays like Lost Bay, Nebraska Bay and Daily Bay will increase your chances.

Grouse hunting continues to improve, but is only keeping pace with last year, falling a little below expectations.

Namakan and Kabetogama are providing excellent fall fishing, combine that with grouse hunting and you will have a memorable time.

A caution to drivers, the deer are showing up in numbers along the roadways so be on the lookout.
