Took my 12 year old up to the rifle range for sight in days.  He won a hunt on private land and its in the slug only zone so I took a 20 gauge pump for him to try.  I found some loads that are 5/8 of an ounc so I thought that would be a little better than the full one ounce slugs.  We also took his 25.06 that some of you may remember I had a hard time finding a scope for; that's been taken care of quite well.  And we also had my 12 gauge which i have had much trouble with due to trying to use too powerful of a slug.

Well he shot the 20 gauge and we realized that if we aim about 6" low, it's right on.  He liked it ok even though it has a substantial amount of recoil.  He understands that during hunting, it's only 1 shot.  And who thinks about recoil right after shooting at a deer?

Then he shot his 25.06 and immediatly after the first shot he said "THAT WAS FUN!"   :happy1:  WHEW!  He shot it a few months ago with 90 grain rounds and these are 120 grain.  I thought he'd not like it but he even wanted to move over from the 50 yard range to the 100 and actually hit wthin the bullseye on one shot.  All were pretty good and kept getting tighter and tighter.

My 12 gauge has troubled me for years.  Ive made so many changes I was about to give up on it.  Well I put on a new recoil pad and dropped down from 3" mag sabots to 2 3/4" sabots.  Well within 10 rounds, I had it within 2" of the bullseye.  And better yet, my shoulder doesn't feel like someone took a meat mallet to it.

So its a great day at the range.  I was so afraid that he wouldn't like it and I had put so much efort into it.  Im sure as he gets older he'l build more confidence and it will be more fun for him.

Oh and by the way, Forest Lake Sportsman's Club was the club we went to and it was GREAT!!  It's very clean, nice shooting tables, range scopes at every table, and the staff were a TON of help.   :happy1:  I highly recommend that club for any shooters.

That is a great place to sight in. I was there on Friday. The only thing is it is $12 a gun. But they were very helpful and very clean too.
If today was perfect. There would be no need for tomorrow.
