Ginseng Huntin

Has anyone been out? Season opened just yesterday so went out with my fever and all. Due to not feeling well I just hit a couple woods. One was a known woods that I hadn't been to in a few yrs and the other was new.

The new woods was a nice pleasant surprise. I didn't find a bunch of plants but the size was pretty good on them. Taking only 20 plants to get nearly 3/4's of a lb there. The familiar woods produced about as expected, getting nearly 3/4's a lb there also but taking more than twice the number of plants to do so.

This yr. I am planning on letting a few familiar woods sit and concentrating on finding some more new ones. It isn't quite as fun going through a woods not even knowing if it lives there or not but more exciting when you do make a find.

I never knew ginseng hunting existed. What do you do with the plant when you find it??

Dig the root. By law you must also replant the berries within 10 feet of where found.

I was out again last w/e and didn't find much of it. It was nice though that I did manage to find 3 new woods that hold it. Two of which are know by other diggers as well. I found sign of where they were doing their digging anyhow.

Only managed about 1/3 lb wet and a real good case of poison ivy.
