After heading waaaay north to duck hunt, 10 ducks, snow flurries, and soaking wet gear, it's time to clean up the gun.

Here's my situation:  I wipe down my gun as best as possible and re-case it for transport.  I get home, un-case it and lock it away from my 3 1/2 and 14 mo. children.  2 hours later, I find rust on the outside of the barrel.  The kind that no matter how well you scrub gently, you can still see it after bore cleaner and light oil.  I'm quite fond of my gun, a Benelli SBE 2, and I am embarrassed and frustrated by this.

Suggestions to remove rust with out causing more damage?  I will take it in to a gunsmith for its bi-annual cleaning and preventative maintenance.  What can I do now before the waders gets hung up for the season? :help: :help: :help:

Yeah, it's the black oxide.  I still have it on my other gun, a Benelli Nova, as a matter of fact.

Please do.  Could you elaborate on what exactly will be done to it?  Will it keep the rust from re-appearing in the same spots?  Will it change the look of the gun?

Thanks.  I'll check back tomorrow; sleepy time for me.

well the first question is, is it just a thin layer of surface rust or is it pitted? because if it is pitted that can not be fixed.. but first it will be put in hydrochloric acid for about 2-5 mins. maybe longer depending on how thick the rust it..then it will be put into a soap for cleaning purposes..then it will be put into an electroclean where it uses soad+electrical current for removing all the grease oil/dirt..after that it will be put into a primer where this speeds up the process of oxidation..thats all black oxide really is is just oxidizing a part..and then it will go back and forth between the actuall black oxide solution and the primer until it is completly black..then oil is applied and ready to go..since black oxide is only oxidation of the part there is no material that is added on like there would be in the zinc plationg process.

No pitting on the barrel, just the surface rust.  I ran a toothpick over the rust spots and it didn't catch so I am 99% confident the rust is on the top layer.  Keep me posted.  Thanks.

Do I need to send a choke tube as well so the threads don't clog up?

Sounds good to me.  A clean black, rust free barrel is what I need.  Thanks again. :happy1:
