I can't stress this enough.

When you hit the woods on Saturday morning be safe!! Know what you are shooting at and know what your backstop is, if there is one. Every year we get some bad news out of the woods and 9 times out of 10 it is preventable. So please remember this post and spread it around your camp. Be smart!

Great post Tim.  I cringe every time I hear of a hunting related accident.  Please everyone be as careful as you can so you can keep coming back to enjoy more hunts in the future.  For those of you taking younguns out there, show them the ropes as best you can.  They'll love you for it.

Why can't he go and sit with his dad? You sure there are not other reasons? Set boundries?-YES Tell the kid no-Not sure...

Unless you don't like the Dad either. What an EZ way to get rid of him!

Good luck, and be safe!

Good Point. Get the kid in the woods at least. Tell the Dad he has a few days to get him to the range.

we have no problem with the guy, but he thinks the kid is gonna
hunt. well not with us he isnt! he has never been to our hunting
areas and we dont want a rookie that has never shot before
walking the woods with a gun. he knew all this summer the kid
wanted to hunt and never took him out there or took him to a
range. not a good situation for sure.
no, he wont take the kid with him to the stand, its either the kid
hunts or they dont..

i should have added..  not because he is a kid, but if he was 50
and never shot before and never seen where we hunt. he wont
be in camp either. we have rules about new hunters.

Just an FYI all kids up to and including age 13 must sit with an adult they are not allowed to hunt on their own!! They are not allowed to sit on a stand or to hunt by themselves until age 14 and even then it is recommended to have an adult near by to deter any bad situation that may occur. So that being said tell the dad if he is willing to let the boy hunt on the same stand as him the entire time he should be welcome, however anything else would be breaking the law. However the kid should have learned that in GSC as that is were our kids told us about that law. And yes that law has been in effect for at least the last 5 years so every parent of every child that has completed the class should be aware of this law.

Good luck on your decision, I do hope that you would allow the child to sit with the dad, on the same stand, the boy will NEVER get experience if he is not allowed to hunt, and I would rather see the kid hunt with dad then to never hunt at all, better to have him in the woods than to have him running the streets raising cane.

This is just my two bits but take it for what it is worth I have personally taken 3 young boys out to get started hunting none of which were my boys, you will teach the child many positive things by being in the woods, don't miss an opportunity to keep them thinking about their future and how important the second amendment is to our heritage!!! Now I am taking my step son out these days, and soon my son who is only 5 heck he has been with me every year on the stand since he was two, this will be his third just sitting with me and spending time with ME in the stand, what a great way to get learn about your kids, and what they are all about.

I get the feeling that you may not have children, if so how did you teach them to hunt? IF you do have kids think back to when you were starting them out, and how you taught them to hunt.

Have a safe and happy deer season!!

Randy, I think the whole point of your rules for deer camp was missed due to the previous post.

You have rules for your hunting camp and the party you are hunting with is enforcing them with good intentions. I think it's a good rule that a "newbie" at the age of 50 or 13 should practice with the weapon they intend on hunting with before the season starts especially thier first year of hunting. The dad had plenty of time to prepare his son for this season, that is not your fault.

That is part of the reason why I don't party hunt down here in SEMN 'cause I always got grouped up with people that I didn't know that well. It's not a personal thing, just a safety thing to me I guess.

There is plenty of public land in this state for anyone to go and hunt. I wouldn't worry about it and I'm sure it will work itself out.

I hope everyone will be safe out there................... Dont forget about tree stand safety........
We just had a friend from Minnesota Archery fall out of a tree stand this weekend........
He was heading up and old wood stand built in some trees and the top step pulled out and fell 15feet down landed on his back,  cracked his ribs an poked one rib in his lung.  He is doing better but that not how I would want to end my season

BE SAFE AND GOOD LUCK

a reminder that a lot of injuries, about half of the 23 the dnr had reported were inflicted by hunters in the same party. i think we should all look at this before the hunting season each year.

randy you made the right call. I told my brother the same thing with my nephew, but in that case my nephew was always too busy with his girlfriend to come check stands or shoot his rifle so he can sit home.

My son will be out with me, if the right moment presents its self...He will be harvesting a deer.
If not, he will still get the experience of the hunt.

We did sit out on the early doe season together, but didn't get to pull the trigger. I think he learned what not to do, and hopefully has a chance this time around.
He has been on the range with me and is a very good shot. Will he get buck fever? One never knows until that moment.

Safety is ALWAYS #1, if you don't feel comfortable with it, then don't do it!

seems they only time thet want to come around is when its
hunting season, I for one,  want to see how he handles a gun.
we would have no problem with him in his dads stand to watch
only. the dad is not the brightest bulb on the tree either!
the reason i can say all this is, my buddy Rick is the grandpa
of this kid and he says no way he is hunting in our camp.
if they want to stay at our camp and hunt state land, they
can go for it.
