Despite extreme heat and forest fires Da Boys decided to go fishing.? This is my report on a day spent in the boat on Basswood Lake with none other that the infamous Smallmouthguide.

The day started early with me arriving at Lee's cabin at LaTourell's resort at 6:45 Sunday morning.? We loaded up the boat with my stuff and then went back up to the cabin for a breakfast of sausage and eggs.? Lee munched while I drank my coffee.? I was too excited to eat and my stomach was a little miffed after only getting about 2 hours of sleep and after the hour and a half drive, all I wanted to do was get in the boat.?

When EEL-LEE finished eating we headed out down the chain of lakes for Basswood.? This first photo was taken right after we left the dock.? There is plenty of smoke in the air from the fires and he breathed our share that day. (this report will take several posts so I can fit the photos in).

About 9 miles later we were on our first spot.  We had not had our lines in the water for 20 minutes when Lee hooked into a Hawg -

When the battle was over the Master netted this beautiful fish and hoisted it into the boat for a quick CPR - the fish measured 31"!

Other than some small Bass it was kind of quiet for the next hour or so until it was my turn.  This one measured 28 1/4".

A short time later a couple of friends of mine who were up camping decided to come out and fish the same area and breath a little of the forest fire smoke.

The spot cooled off so we decided to see some more of the lake.  Lee showed me the steam boiler by 4 mile portage and then we went all the way into back bay because I had never been back there. We tested the pan fishing and picked up a few but nothing specail.  We also ran into some of Lee's friends who were in the bay who informed us of a cow and calf moose who were resting in the shade along side the lake.  We did not  see them for sure on our way in, but found them on the way back out.  It was increadable.  We even got to see the calf nursing on the mother!

This photo was taken from the campsite that is at the very back end of Back Bay looking back towards the entrance to the bay.

They are hard to capture with the camera when they are in the shade.  Here is a shot of them walking down the shore. (I caught some video of the calf nursing, but it is not the best quality.  I will send it to Mayfly to see if he can do anything with it.  I also shot video of Lee catching the 31"er.)

When we left Back Bay we went to visit my buddy's at their campsite so we could have them take our picture.? Lee's friend earlier had asked if we were brothers and we said no, just two really hansom Norwegians in the same boat for the day.?

I don't know though, cause looking at this photo we do kinda look like conjoined twins hey!? Maybe we were separated at birth.? I don't remember.? It was too long ago :D.

After we left Pogo and Darrel (my buddies) we headed back to try the same spot we started at.? It payed off and Lee caught one more Hawg that went 28 1/2".?

What a day!

Boy, I tell ya, if someone would have told me years ago that I would someday spend a day in a boat on Basswood with a BASS fisherman from Illanoise I would have laughed in their face :D.?

But, other than the fact that he talks kinda funny, he is a blast to hang with!

He will be there until this weekend when his vacation is over.?

See you next year Lee.? ?Thank you Bud!!!

Excellent!!!!!!!  You really caught what a day trip on Basswood is all about.  Thanks for posting all the great pics!!

Hey that pic of you two together looks like your getting ready for a sumo wresting match.  I've got to make sure my bod never gets caught in between those two bellies.  It would snap like a twig.
My initial response was to sue her for defamation of character, but then I realized that I had no character.

Big thanks to Dr. Bob for excepting my last minute invitation to fish Basswood. I know what a difficult decision it was for you to put those home work projects on the back burner for a fishing outing. I heard that you left the power saw running and the paint brush was? still in the open paint can when you got home. The state police said they had to mail your speeding ticket since you refused to stop for them.

All the photos and captions are looking good. It's amazing how fast an 11 hr fishing trip can pass by when your in good company. ( even if he talks funny)

I plan to post Lee's Boundary Waters Adventures 2006 as soon as I get a chance. It may take me a week or so to get it all organized. Of course it will include some photos of my older brother Dr Bob.
