St. Croix 5-5-09

Well, good times and bad times on the Croix tonight. Wasn't sure if I was going to have to cancel or not with the storms. Got to Beanies and had some storms so got everything ready and waited in the truck. Took about ten minutes and it was over. Got the boat in the water and was tieing lines while waiting for my clients to show up.

I had the pleasure to take out a couple, Mike & Michelle, tonight. Both are very good fisherman but haven't been on the river before. Being they wanted crappie action, I launch out of Beanies and headed up stream. Tried various spots marking fish the whole way, just couldn't get comitments!! I didn't sit at a spot for more than 20 or 30 minutes and we were trying new spots. Worked our way up to the rail road bridge and saw a few carp get caught. Also one boat was on the white bass. I wanted these guys to get on fish, but would prefer them to be walleye or crappie that they were after.

So we moved further up to Anderson Bay. Mike got a rock bas pretty quickley followed by a decent crappie and then a sheephead.  :BangHead: By this time the clouds were moving in so I thought it would be best to head back towards Beanies so we wouldn't have too far go to if we got hit with night or weather. Got to the railroad bridge and the dude fishing it was gone. We pulled in and Mike took 4 or 5 nice sized white bass on a jig and minnow. Then we heard some thunder. I figured it was time to head in. I said we would stop at the 94 bridge and jig for some eyes as long as their is no lighening.

Well, just started going and we got hit hard. Lightening, thunder, downpoor and hail!! Couldn't see to far in front of the boat and when the wind pushed the rain in my mouth I would loose my breath a couple of times. By the time we got in the weather was better. Talked to Mike & Michelle for a little while. They said they had a good time. Hard with the lack of quality fish, I was talking with others and didn't seem anyone was catching much after the afternoon storm. They seem to have had a really good time and the white bass faught really good for them. They have another tripped booked in two weeks, we'll see if I can't get Michelle to get some by then.
