Here's a new one to chew on.  Some of the article repeats from my last post.

Animal-rights group PETA asks Waupaca County prosecutors for maximum sentences in deer-killing case

Gannett Wisconsin Media • January 23, 2009

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has called on Waupaca County prosecutors to seek the maximum penalty in the case of three men accused of slaughtering deer with snowmobiles.

The animal-rights group, more commonly called PETA, mailed and faxed a letter today to the prosecutor assigned to the case — Assistant Dist. Atty. James Fassbender — telling him crimes against animals frequently are a warning sign that a person is prone to violent crimes against people, too.

The three men, all living in the Weyauwega area, made initial court appearances last week.

Rory Kuenzi, 24, is charged with six felony counts of mistreatment of animals and one felony count of vehicle theft. He was held on a $25,000 cash bond.

His brother, Robby Kuenzi, 23, and Nicholas D. Hermes, 23, also are charged with five felony counts each of mistreatment of animals. Robby Kuenzi is being held on a $1,000 cash bond. Hermes was released on a $15,000 signature bond.

Investigators say the men used their snowmobiles to corral the deer, who were feeding in a field about five miles south of Waupaca, then ran them down.

Rory Kuenzi told a detective he hit two of the five deer that were found dead, and he did a “burn out” on one of the animals, according to the criminal complaint.

He also said he struck a deer in the back legs, jumped off his snowmobile and pinned it to the ground by sitting on it, then tied it by the neck to a tree with the help of his brother. That deer strangled itself trying to get free.

Rory Kuenzi also told the detective he ran down a sixth deer on his way home, field dressed it and brought the meat home.

Neither Nicholas Hermes nor Robby Kuenzi has a criminal record, according to online court records, though Robby Kuenzi was ticketed in 2003 for shining wild animals.

Rory Kuenzi was convicted in 2005 of substantial battery and sentenced to a year in prison on the conviction in December 2007 when his probation was revoked. He also is the focus of an ongoing investigation into a 2004 hit-and-run crash that killed 20-year-old pedestrian Kevin McCoy,

PETA also is asking Fassbender to make sure if the men are convicted that any animals in their charges are seized and that they are barred from possessing animals in the future.
Take a kid hunting and fishing... It'll be the best thing for generations to come.
