I hope this is the right place to post this, I'm not trying to spam the boards.

I have a question about MN hand gun laws.  I know that you have to be at least 21 to purchase a handgun from a licensed FFL dealer. I'm 20, is it legal for me to buy one from another individual?

Thanks!

Just to give you some feedback which may not be completely accurate but close. I don't know about purchase for sure but to posess a handgun in Mn.You must be 18  And not convicted of a crime of violence for 10 years, not Mentally ill, not a Habitual drug user, Not arrested for drug sale or possesion other than a small amount of Marijuana,or a alcohol depended person. This is only info that allows you to posess a handgun meaning in your sole control. If you meet the criteria you may have a handgun in your home or business or the states woods or waters. Not in your front seat or at a school amongst other places.

remember you get what you pay for.. and advice on the internet is free. when it comes to something that is serious like illegal possesion of a firearm and with the way some liberal judges are I wouldn't risk taking a "yes" on the internet for something that could shadow you for a long time. call your local PD, or sheriff and ask them. because a print screen from this or any other website isn't a great defense in court. and while your talking with them ask them about the shortin barrel for your mossberg.

ou may receive a handgun as a gift from a parent or guardian before you are 21 but it is against the law for you to buy one.  Also you cannot buy handgun ammunition from a store until you are 21, the exception to this is if you bring in a long gun that fires handgun ammo you can buy the ammo at 18.
As for shotgun barrels they must be at least 18" long.
If you ask your local police department they probably will not know the facts but you can try.

Good luck.

And not convicted of a felony for 10 years....................
That's a new one, I never saw an expiration date on a felony.

Now Minnesota may a minimum time before you can have some convictions expunged from your records.  Be convicted of murder and there isn't a 10 year limitation on the felony and you get your 2nd Amendment rights back.

Good piece of advice.  :happy1:

I was wrong on the 10 years for a felony. it is 10 years on a crime of violence. I should have proofread that one

Any felony it's ten yrs weather it's one of violence or not.

I have two responses to this.

Number one would be could you please link this statute from a reliable source such as a state or federal web site.

The other response is not as friendly, but that would be, could you please refrain from spreading such b.s..  If you can prove me wrong, hey, I will put the apology in as large of font available. A felony conviction is a felony conviction and is there is no 10 year forgiveness.  Now there may be an extreme exception, but please point this out and I am more than happy to eat crow..........

If you are joking based on the cartoon, well that is in poor taste and bad information.

Sorry to burst your bubble guys but the Feds do not care if it's a violent felony
or not.  As far as they are concerned a felony is a felony and you can't buy a
gun.

Five classes of persons are prohibited from possessing handguns.[9] These are: (1) individuals who have been convicted of a crime of violence in any jurisdiction, unless 10 years have passed since the individual’s civil rights have been restored or his sentence has expired and provided that he has not been convicted of a second crime of violence in that period; (2) individuals who have been committed as "mentally ill ... .. mentally deficient," or "dangerous to the public," unless they are no longer suffering from the disability; (3) juveniles under 18 years of age who do not fall within one of the four specified exceptions; [10] (4) individuals who have been convicted of unlawful use, possession or sale of a controlled substance (other than a small amount of marijuana) or have been committed for treatment for the habitual use of a controlled substance; and (5) individuals confined or committed as an "inebriate person" unless they possess proof that they have not abused alcohol during the previous two years

I can't find felony mentioned.

Now crimes of violence, like domestic assault or abuse can fall under the crime of violence.  That would still be IF you could get it removed from your record and your rights restored, then 10 years later you could possibly own a handgun.

A convicted felon cannot.

I am not a lawyer or a gun dealer so I don't know any of the technicals. No I don't have any regulations to show.

My mothers nieghbor got his 7 DWI, which is a felony. He isn't allowed to have in possesion any firearms for ten yrs. Another guy from a near by town has had 8 and he told me the same thing. Another guy "who I worked for long time ago when I was young" was convicted for fraudulantly signing federal documents "loan documents for federal loans, which he got the loan and paid it back." That's the reason they could only get him for signing false documents, he paid the loan back. All these are felony convictions, they were told after 10 yrs they could again have rights restored.

These are just examples I know of. None of these guys would hurt a flee. None of em are dangerous except the 2 maybe when behind the wheel.

Not all violent crimes are considered felonies but do limit gun possesion. Not all felonys are violent crimes but do limit gun possesion.

If I have to eat crow well so be it.

I just reread my post and I don't know maybe it could be taken the wrong way.

It should say "any felony it's atleast ten yrs weather one of violence or not." That is what I meant to say anyways.

I learned not to ever try to paraphrase any legal language. No wonder there is so much trouble with legislators trying to figure out what the wording actually means. Sheesta

That they may, but it is not automatic and not a sure thing.  They have to get an attorney to file for the paperwork and it still might not clear their record for handgun ownership.  That many DWI may keep him from ever owning a firearm, but their voting rights could be restored.  The fraudulent documents, or what they call a white collar crime has a very good chance of getting his recorded cleared, he never presented a reckless danger to anyone like the drunk drivers did.
