Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 5/11/2009

Wow, what an opening day for Kabetogama. The weather did test anglers’ determination, as part of the day featured light snow, sleet and cold rain. The end of the day was cool, but cleared off for a beautiful sunny mid-50’s Sunday.

As for fishing, Saturday was great; anglers were greeted with a strong and continuous bite. Jig and minnow was the best proven technique, with slip-bobber and minnow coming in second.

The scenario was big fish, pre-spawn females in shallow, and smaller male counterparts in deeper 30 – 40’ waters. Some flowages that attracted bait fish gave up a mixed bag of various- size Walleyes and Northern Pike.

Many anglers complained of the big fish-only syndrome--not a bad problem to have-- however, if you only fished shallow waters, that was to be expected.

Anglers preferred rainbow chubs in the deeper zones; a slow jig presentation was best. On the Northwest end of the lake—Sugarbush, Pin Cherry and Harris Islands were good locations. On the East end of Kab, Sunday was a great day over near the Martin Islands, and into Mud and Daily Bays.

Oh, did I mention, Kabetogama will be hosting the 2010 Fishing Season Governor’s Open. The Kabetogama community is pleased, and proud to have this opportunity to show off our area, and a most beautiful part of Voyageurs National Park.
