DNR Fisheries summer fieldwork schedule on area lakes.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be conducting fisheries surveys and assessments during the 2009 field season in the Aitkin fisheries area.


Fisheries surveys and assessments monitor changes in fish populations and determine whether management strategies have been effective.  Survey frequency varies on each lake depending on angler use, lake size, frequency of stocking, DNR staff use the data in developing individual fisheries lake management plans.  The plans identify goals for key species in the lake and outline specific management activities.

Lakes scheduled for survey work this season:

Spring electrofishing for largemouth bass:  Hill, Long, Nord, Esquagamah
Standard surveys or assessments: Round (NW of McGregor), June 15-19; Nord, June 22-26;  Seth, June 29-July 3;  Big Sandy, July 6-10; Dam, July 13-17; Long, July 20-24; Wilkins, July 27-31; Hill, July 27-31; Esquagamah, Aug. 3-7; Thorton, Aug. 10-14; Sissabagamah. Aug. 17-21; Horseshoe, Aug.24-28
Spring musky assessment, annual fall survey in September and  zebra mussel assessments throughout the summer: Mille Lacs
Trout lake assessments in October: Loon, Taylor, and Blue
2009 fieldwork already completed on lakes:

Spring trap netting for northern pike: Hill
Spring trap netting and electro-fishing for walleye: Big Sandy
Spring trap netting for muskies: Mille Lacs
Electro-fishing for bass: Nord , Esquagamah
2009 fieldwork completed on streams:

Electro-fishing for brook trout and standard surveys and assessments Morrison Brook
