On opener, I walked by a man gutting a doe.  My hunting buddy watched, as he hasn't seen it done before.  On the way back, I asked my buddy if the other guy had kept the heart and the liver.  Turns out he had thrown it into the gut pile.

I left it, but next time, what are the logistics of asking a hunter for the heart and liver?  My wife loves both.  Seems a waste to me.  I understand that not everybody would want to eat those parts, but my wife would, and I don't mind the liver myself.

Do I have to wait until it's registered, and get the hunter's information?  Or can I just put it in a plastic bag and take it home without the formalities?

Not sure on the formalities, but I too do not save any internals.

Well, to be "legal", you need a signed slip from the hunter with his or hers information on you if stopped.

Well, thats a pretty good question and I never really have thought of what you need to be legal when you are 'robbing' gutpiles.  I've done it every chance I can.  I hunted public land in the SE part of MN for years and used to make a pretty good haul from robbing gutpiles.  I never really thought about what I needed except for a big game license, but technically, you probably need a note from the owner of the animal that he has 'gifted' you the animal parts, heart, liver, gonads, whatever.

I know the Hmong make a pretty good haul running around the woods cleaning up gutpiles.

If you are saving a wanton wasted useable part of a game animal more power to you. A game warden would really have to be a dink to tag you for that. It could happen though. Deer liver is really sweet and good the heart is good too. I see alot of livers that have flukes in the older deer that I don't save.  I always carry a big ziplock for them parts. I have never robbed gutpiles before though.

I wouldn't worry about it and just take it.
