Lake trout season opens on January 15th and the conditions up here in Ely couldn't be better. Sixteen inches of clear ice is the norm and many guys are already picking out their spots and shacks are starting to appear.
We expect the same methods used last season will still be taking the lions share of lakers.
Chubby Darters and jigs with white tubes were previous leaders. Those who want a more laid back approach that also works, will hang a ciscoe under a tip up. If you fish with a group, stagger your depths to cover the water column. With Burntside being as clear as it is, you don't have to be spot on with the depth as they will find it, but it's better to err on the shallow side as they will come up for a bite right under the ice.
Snowbank lake also in good shape with a plowed road right up to the Bounday Waters already open. Remember if you plan an outing into the B-Dub that no vehicles and no power augers are allowed.
