DNR awards $487,500 in grants for solar energy projects; solicits more applications by May 28

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has awarded $487,500 in grants for 11 solar energy projects within parks or on trails of regional or statewide significance across Minnesota.

Funding for the Solar Energy Legacy Grants program comes from the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment approved by voters in 2008.

Recipients include:

Three Rivers Park District - $144,000 for a roof-mounted solar energy system at the Richardson Nature Center and $37,500 to install rooftop solar panels at the Depot, a renovated train depot in Hopkins that has a coffee shop and serves as a trailhead for three regional trails.

Washington County - $18,000 to install a solar water heaters in the campground shower building at Lake Elmo Park Reserve.

City of Maplewood - $30,000 to install solar hot water panels at Maplewood Community Center.

City of Carver - $10,000 to install solar lighting in the restroom area at Riverside Park.

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board - $46,000 to install solar energy at Carl W. Kroenig Interpretive Center.

City of Saint Paul - $21,000 to install solar lighting at four Grand Rounds trail kiosks.

Ramsey County - $75,000 to install solar power equipment at the Garden Center at Tamarack Nature Center.

Kandiyohi County - $54,000 for the finishing touches that allows the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center to rely entirely on renewable energy.

City of Savage - $41,000 to complete a solar energy system at the McColl Environmental Learning Center.

Dakota County - $11,000 to install a solar hot water system in the restroom and shower building at the campground in Lebanon Hills Regional Park.

The DNR received 17 applications with requests for almost $900,000. Local units of government receiving grants are required to provide at least 25 percent in matching funds.

With $585,000 available in additional grant funding, the DNR is soliciting more solar energy project applications for the next round of grants. Applications are due by May 28.
