Rising rivers threaten to close Fort Snelling State Park this weekend
(Released March 18, 2010)

As the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers surrounding Fort Snelling State Park in the Twin Cities continue to rise rapidly, low areas in the park are flooded and closed, including Pike  Island, Picnic Island and the Sibley Trail, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

There is potential for the main park road to be underwater by the weekend. If that occurs, the entire park will be closed to the public until further notice.

The DNR advises potential users to call the park at 612-725-2389 or check the Visitor Alert on the Fort Snelling State Park’s Web page at http://www.mnstateparks.info/ for updates before visiting.
