Here is 3 pics of our big plot. Last yr we had corn and beans and then planted brassicas into it when the leaves of the beans turned yellow in the fall. We had corn around the outside to screen off the road but it was stunted because we got it in to late and didn't have near enough rain.
So this yr we planted the same corn and beans but left a 15ft wide strip around the outside so we can plant Egyptian Wheat for a screen instead of relying on the corn. We will keep the field sprayed as the corn and beans are round up ready but make sure not to get over spray on the Egyptian Wheat. When the leaves on the beans yellow up in the fall we'll put in brassicas and also to a section of Rye and clover.
The rye and clover will come back in the spring so the Rye will act as a cover crop as the clover gets established. When the rye is mature and seeds out I will mow it down leaving me a nice section of pure lush clover.
I'll keep the pictures and updates coming throughout the yr. Now keep this in mind. We paid our neighbor to disk it. Everything else is done with a 4 wheeler. We broadcast our corn, Beans and Egyptian Wheat then used a Harrow drag to bury the seed. No big farm equiptment besides the neighbor disking it.

Let the small bucks walk. Don't assume the neighbors will shoot them if you don't. If you shoot him what chance does that buck have to grow......ZERO!

Also keep this in mind. We are in northern MN no where near farm land. This field for yrs was weeds. Last yr we got off our butts and decided to put some elbow grease into our land. Here is some pics of some deer we had coming in every night. In the one picture you can see the corn in the background in how short it was. Still had cobs on it but I didn't care about that I wanted height for a screen. In all the yrs I've maybe seen 3 deer in this field. Last yr it was everyday.

Yeah his belly is hanging low for sure but his back and shoulders are geared more towards a 3 1/2 yr old rather than a 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 yr old like his belly is advertising. Maybe he was just fat from all the good food he had to eat. This buck never was seen on any other field! He was seen once during hunting bedded less than a 100 yards from the field. He wasn't shot by anyone and we saw him this winter with one side of his rack still on. Hope he puts some more onto that rack for this yr.

I do alot of food plots down here and putting corn as a border is a great idea I might have to try that this year

Yeah just make sure you ferilize with plenty of nitrogen. The corn will take off then.

I'll be taking some more pics of this plot this weekend while I'm putting in the Egyptian Wheat around the border. If it looks like we'll be getting rain I'll throw down some Fertilizer also to give everything a jump start.

Hey E what do you think would make a better border for my city plot  Egyptian Wheat  or corn I don’t care about a food source here I just need cover from neighboring views. What will grow easier and hold up. I was thinking about 10-12 feet wide

I'm trying egyptian wheat for the first time this yr. I need at least a 10ft or higher screen where I'm at. The road sits a little higher than the field I'm planting. The guys I've talked too and I've talked to plenty, all say that it works great as a tall screen. Pretty much all of them proved it with pictures. Some emailed me pics of it from growing season into Febuary. The majority of them had it 12-14ft tall.
If you only need a 6-8ft screen because you get the bonus of the food draw. (deer will eat Egyptian Wheat but prefer corn way more) Just make sure when you plant either of them you fertilize with nitrogen. Urea is a good fertilizer and it's pure nitrogen. Usually pretty cheap. Work the soil up with a drag if you don't have means to a disk then just broadcast the corn or Egyptian Wheat. Drag over the corn after broadcasting it. Egyptian Wheat you just want to work soil up then broadcast then let the rain work it into the soil because you might bury it to deep if you drag over it.

Well I got the Egyptian Wheat in the ground this weekend. I sprayed with roundup and broadcasted the seed in. I couldn't fertilize because there was no chance for rain but this weekend I'll put the fertilizer down as they are calling for some serious rainfall this weekend.

Here is what the seed looks like in my hand spreader. All of my food plots are planted with a hand spreader. Corn and beans were put in with this also.

It's a small seed and you want to plant it pretty thin. 6lbs to a acre. The thinner you plant the taller and thicker the stocks will grow. Providing a bigger screen and able to hold up to wind and snow better. I put the seeder on the 2nd smallest opening and turned the reel slow and walked fast.

It's my first time with this stuff and if I get the fertilizer in the ground along with good rain throughout the yr it should work like a charm....but it's MN so I'm not holding my breath.

Hope it pops up after this rain this weekend. It's suppose to grow pretty rapidly so we'll see what happens. Where's some updates on your plots???

Corn is coming up pretty good. After this rain we got it should start taking off. Not bad for being broadcasted I might add.

Beans are being ate by the deer pretty hard but I found one that hasn't been hit.

The Egyptian Wheat is popping up pretty good also.

I fertilized the strips of corn and Egyptian Wheat with Urea right before a good soaking rain.

I'm hoping this is the 9pt we had running around in this plot last yr.
