Turkey Hunting Questions

Alright so I wanna go Turkey hunting this spring. I understand there is a Lottery for it but is that only for adults? What is the lottery for? What does it do? Whats late season surplus?

Seeing im 16, can I still get a firearm turkey license or only a archery one?

Also, what is some good public land for turkeys? I still plan on buying that big atlas book at Gander Mountain that has all the land marked out but how do you know where each species is?

Im still new to hunting and really wish my family had been huge hunters. Sadly, my cousin is the only family member that wants to hunt too and he is 14.

First off 

-- I am not an expert on Turkey hunting, but you can still get a license if you are lucky.  The leftover licenses are offered to other hunters that may not have got one.  On March 14th at 5pm, surplus licenses go on sale for those who applied for a certain season and didnt get drawn (which is what I did last year - I applied for an earlier season and didnt get it, but I got a surplus license for a later season that still had them available)  However, I am guessing you didnt apply.  If after that, there are leftover licenses, on March 16th at 12pm (noon) the last remaining licenses will go on sale (THAT IS YOU).  You will have to check online to see what zones still have licenses and what weekends you want to go.  Its all first come, first serve, so alot of people are in line at around the time they go on sale.
Unfortunately, for turkey hunting, if you get a shotgun license, you can only hunt the specified 'season' that you buy the license for. 
However, you can buy an archery license for the late seasons..... (not sure which ones, F, G and H maybe).  That is your best bet - you will just have to figure out what zone you want to hunt in.  It isnt like deer hunting where you can buy a generic archery tag.

You should be able to get a license for shotgun any season you want. Go to the the place near you that sells licenses and run your hunters safety number. Then get a box call or a slate call, get a pop-up blind or some blind material, get a decoy, and a box of shell. You can find turkey sounds on the internet, so you know what to sound like. Then take your gun out to the range and shoot at a 15 inch circle, move the target around till you get a good concentration of pellets in the circle. Now get out there and have some fun seeing if you can get that old tom to talk to you

Yup, since you are under 17 you can purchase a license for any time.......

New this year: It is not necessary to enter into the lottery for time periods G and H. The G and H time periods
will be available to anyone. The G and H time period licenses will be sold as a surplus license at ELS agent
locations in mid March.

 All youth age 17 and younger by April 13, 2011 can purchase a youth turkey license over the counter to hunt
any single time period A-H beginning March 1, 2011. Youth must select a time period and permit area. Any youth
17 and younger by April 13, 2011 need not apply for the lottery and will be rejected from the lottery.
